Hi Sue,

Thank you for using Windows 10.

I would be able to assist you better if you could provide some more information:

  • Are you using any web-browser or any mail-client(mail app/WLM/Outlook)?
  • Are you using any Microsoft Office app?
  • Is the issue specific to any particular browser/app?

Kindly reply with the information and we'll be glad to assist.

I am using Microsoft Outlook Office 2003 for my e-mail and after downloading Windows 10 when I click on a hyperlink in an e-mail I get a window showing my document files and a question asking to "locate link browser"  When I find IE in the program files and select this I get my home page and not the link.

I have gone to default programs and made sure I had IE as the default for HTML links.  If I change the default programs for HTML files to Microsoft Edge then the links will open in Edge but that is a problem as all my history and passwords do not automatically open.  Microsoft Edge is useless.

How can I fix this back to the way if worked on all previous versions of Windows?

It is driving us mad.  Lots of people appear to have the same problem but I see no easy fix.

Please can someone help. . . . . . .

I have the same problem with Outlook 2010. Hyperlilnks do not work in email. Also using Edge for Browser. Links on a webpage work only part of the time.  A few weeks ago when my computer was new all worked just fine. I'm think Windows updates may be causing the problem.   I am using Windows 10 on 6 week old new computer.  HELP.

There's a registry fix called opennew.reg. Google it and you'll probably find it. This fixed the problem.

Actually that search doesn't find much, but the link you need for it is http://www.outlook-tips.net/tips/outlook-on-windows-10-hyperlinks-dont-work/. You can download it from there.

It seems that if you are having this issue and the MS fix does not work. As this was the case for me using win10 with Outlook 2013 and edge browser. Upon searching I found a post which states that in most cases this is caused when uninstalling another browser namely Chrome and firefox with the main culprit within them being adobe.

A simple fix which worked for me was re downloading chrome and installing setting it as your default browser. Then apply the MS Fix as stated using chrome or firefox which ever you reinstalled. go back and try your outlook again. If this has fixed it then should you wish to continue using edge or whatever browser you wish to use. Simply reset your default programs within your internet options as per the MS fix again and hopefully your sorted. If that fails I would suggest trying to find the post which I had found I would post it here if I could remember it.

All the best!!

I had this issue in the Windows 10 Mail App. tried reinstalling the mail app (via the Powershell), but didn't help. The error was "Unable to open <URL>" when I click any link in an email.

In my case, it just happened that I had removed Firefox which was my default browser, but somehow it had not removed itself as the default program from  system settings. After fixing that in 'Default Programs' by setting a new browser as the default program (chrome in my case) for all web file types the issue was fixed.
