Microsoft Print to PDF in Windows 10

When I try to print a webpage to PDF using Microsoft Print to PDF, I go through the normal process of naming the file and file is created. However, when I try to open the file I get the following alert:

This happens regardless of using Edge or Chrome.

I also tried installing an Adobe Printer using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI. When I use that printer, no file is created when I use that print option.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community forum.

We are sorry for the inconvenience you are facing in Windows 10.

I would suggest you to provide some information to help you better.

  1. Did you make any changes to PC prior to this issue?
  2. Is this issue specific to the file?
  3. Does this issue occur with Internet Explorer?

I would suggest you to refer the below link to check if it helps.

Note: You may also try to give a different name to the file and check if that helps. Ensure not to use special characters for the file name and check the status.

Keep us posted to help you better.

Thank you

I have a similar issue. Microsoft Print to PDF creates a file in the User/Documents folder, but that file is only 1kb and will not open. This has happened using the Print to PDF dialogue from Edge and from Reader.

This fixed it for me:

You need to add a registry entry that makes Adobe Reader more tolerant of the format created by Print to PDF.

Hello,

Thank you for your input.

I hope that your suggestions may help other community members to resolve similar issues.

I appreciate it.

However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Identical issue as described and it is 9 months later.

None of the recommended solutions work.

Surely you have sorted it out by now?

Surely they haven't spent a single iota of time worrying about whether they fix this issue or not.  Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe are too busy implementing their new "False Empathy" policies in the help pages.

The "False Empathy" policy states that customers will feel better about poor outcomes if you express understanding with statements such as, "We are sorry for the inconvenience you are facing in Windows 10." or "I can understand how this issue must be frustrating to you."

This False Empathy policy has improved the product because customers respond positively to smile surveys about the quality of customer service just before throwing their computers into the trash.  In addition, the False Empathy policy has improved profitability because Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe no longer have to spend money and precious engineering resources to actually fix problems.

I had a similar problem and, after much online research, wandered upon the answer (for me, at least). The Print to PDF printer generates a null file when there's a comma "," in either the file name or in the directory tree/path, or both.

Examples:

C://Documents/Lunch, Dinner menus/Pizza, beer, desserts.pdf = no good

C://Documents/Lunch, Dinner menus/Pizza-beer-desserts.pdf = no good

C://Documents/Lunch and Dinner menus/Pizza, beer, desserts.pdf = no good

C://Documents/Lunch and Dinner menus/Pizza-beer-desserts.pdf = good

C://Documents/Lunch and Dinner menus/Pizza beer desserts.pdf = good

Hope this helps.
