FS9 2004 compatability with Windows 10

Grrr. Since upgrading to W10, Ms Flight Sim 2004 will not run. I've followed advice from various sources regarding DirectX, Nvidia conflicts etc, all to no avail, so today I did a reinstall and ran the compatibility checker. Having tried to run the program in all available compatibility modes, again to no avail, the checker pronounced that FS9 is NOT a compatible program.

I am furious. It's not a cheap product, but it is one I have enjoyed across many platforms and now, even as a retiree, I still get enjoyment from it.

Does anyone have a simple work-around, or maybe some inside information to suggest that MS is going to provide a patch of some sort? It is their flaming program after all and their must be 1000s of users in the same boat. (Or should that be flying boat?)

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you are facing some issues using Windows 10.

This might have occurred due to some system conflicts.

Try the methods.

Method 1:

Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. It will scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows. To run the SFC scan, refer to the Microsoft article below.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Method 2:

I would suggest you to create a new user account and check if that helps.

Refer to the Link given below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-10

Hope this information helps. Please let us know if you need any other assistance with Windows in future. We will be happy to assist you.

Dear Mayank

This is not the answer.

MICROSOFT FS9/2004 was running in full-screen mode on literally millions of PC under Windows 7and 8 until those of us naive enough 'upgraded' to Windows 10.  No changes in our settings, graphics cards etc; nada - the only change was loading up Windows 10 OS.

The result is that FS9 WILL NOT display in full screen mode - period.

From my reading of many posts on this subject, it did run up to W10 10830(?), I believe.  Thereafter, you (MICROSOFT) have done something to the code on subsequent iterations that prevents full-screen display in this program.

Please sort it!

Problem solved thanks to the Just Flight community. Users of FS9 need to download a new FS9.exe file and replace their current FS9.exe. I did that and it works perfectly. Even better, with the W10 upgrade, I had a 3D vision photo viewer installed which I activated, and now FS9 is in 3D (red/blue anaglyph glasses required). Flying in 3d is a whole new experience.

I hope this helps.

I was sent this my a forum member.

If you still require CD 4 in the drive, follow these instructions:
1. First, make sure that you have updated to the FS9.1 version. If not, download and install it from here:

www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9727

2. Second, download the FS9.1 no-CD patch here:

flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/15244/microsoft-flight-simulator-2004-v91-no-cd-patch/

3. Third, install the patch by:

a. Rename your current fs9.exe file (in your main FS2004 folder) to fs9.exe.orig
b. Copy the fs9.exe file from the patch file downloaded in step 2 into your main FS2004 folder.
c. Start FS9 and it should start without the CD in the drive.

Because an update stopped my FS9 from working I use the no-cd patch. It works.

Well, I thought I was onto something with this.  I reinstalled FS9 from disks, ran the update, installed the nocd patch referenced above, and still doesn't work.  I try running the new FS9 file right out of the FS folder, or on the desktop as administrator, and I just get a black screen with a larger than usual spinning "wait" circle until it finally tells me "Flight Simulator has stopped working" message after about 3 minutes.

So disappointed.  Hoping this was my fix!
