PC Now only shows as Media Device on LAN

The PC always showed as PC  on LAN but today it is not on Explorer Network tree and only shows as Media Device.

I do see it on NetBScanner.

I have 1803

How do I get it back to where it should be?

Thanks

Hi David,

I think this is due to homegroup being removed in 1803. Check out these links below:

Homegroup has been discontinued with the release of Windows 10 1803.Your best option is to use a basic peer to peer workgroup network with Public File Sharing and Permissions. Learn more:

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/connect-netowr...

and

https://www.groovypost.com/howto/share-files-st...

Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status
Scroll to the bottom
Click Network and Sharing Center

Click Change advanced sharing settings
Expand All Networks
Under Password protected sharing

Switch between 'Turn on password protected sharing and Turn off password protected sharing'

Then choose 'Turn off password protected sharing'

Then click 'Save changes'

Also:

Press Windows key + R
Type: optionalfeatures.exe
Hit Enter

Scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
Tick the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Automatic Removal and
Untick SMB 1.0/CIFS Server

Click OK
Restart if prompted.

Additional troubleshooting steps you can attempt:
- shut all computer and network gear down.
- Turn off IPv6
- Try browsing to some of the computers manually, press Windows key + R, type: \\computername, hit Enter
- Press Windows key + R
Type: services.msc
Hit Enter

1. Start the "Function Discovery Provider Host" and "Function Discovery Resource Publication" services, and then set them toAutomatic (Delayed Start).
2. When you open Explorer Network, enable network discovery when you are prompted.

Press Windows key + X > computer management-->shared folders--> choose the shared folder, right click it then click Properties > Share Permissions -->protection that everyone can read and execute, see folder contents and read permissions.

Add the machine to your Windows HOSTS file.

Homegroup is removed from Windows 1803 and that caused problems for networking.

Here is my example with screenshots how I make PC's to show in File Explorer network section, change network profile and setup file/folder shares with Windows v 1803.

Hi and thanks for the suggestions.

I tried those and was able to Search for the PC in the Windows+R panel however can't do it again.

That time it did show up and I was able to transfer files.  It also showed in the Explorer tree but not under Computer in the right side screen.  It has gone from the tree but is still there under Media Devices though.

Now a error panel asks if I have spelt it correctly etc.

It also shows this PC and a Qnap I have on the LAN and when I others boot others on the LAN, they show too.

Weird because this PC has been on 1803 for a while and the LAN has been okay even though that PC is still 1709.

Have never been with Homegroup.

Thanks

"Now a error panel asks if I have spelt it correctly etc."

Was that error like this?

In that case see step 6 on my example for work around that.

Hi Pauli O.

Thanks for your help again.

Crazy as it may sound but I was just about to add to add it to the host file and when I went to Explorer, there the PC was.

All bushy tailed and smiling !  Has access to the files and all is fine again.

After I reboot later I will check and see if it is stable. If not will go the host file route.

Appreciate the help.

That's typical issue on 1803. One time share works after reboot few moment later it doesn't.

Some cases just disabling IPv6 may work (In my case it's working).  Try that before editing hosts file

Thanks again.  Yes I will disable 6m and see what happens.

It is such an incredible time waster. I have spent hours since 1803 came down . Dost me a bunfle in time production.

I have 6 PCs and 3 printers on the LAN.

The printers were and in one case still, a big problem.

Anyway M$ gets away with using the millions of us as testers.

I do appreciate the help.

I get back if it messes up again..  :-(

This explains how Cortana suddenly has no results for 'homegroup'.

How can Microsoft be crap enough to remove a major feature without giving users warning and a straightforward (e.g. a wizard) way to re-establish their local network connections.

I understand they are planning the same for file history.

How can they remove features without at least providing clear and simple guidance for users.

Do they HATE their user base?

Turning on SMB solved my problem where computer would only appear as media device on itself and other networked computers.
