How To FIX Missing Computer Icons In Network Folder

**>>UPDATE: Windows 10 v1803<<**

Since Windows 10 came out, it has the issue of PC icons missing in network folder. One minute they may appear after a restart or Windows update and the next minute they are missing. And one PC may show them and others not.

V1803 may also have issues connecting to other PC's on Network. There is a fix for that here too below in Step C.

For Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 Network Sharing

For Windows 7, 8 and 10 HomeGroup Sharing: (Excluding W10 v1803)

Do this on all PC's/Laptops:

Open Task Manager>>Services Tab>>>>

More Services>>Open Services (On Bottom).

or

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\Services

*>>Set both Function Discovery Services to Automatic and start them, This will help discover other Devices or PC's and especially if PC ICONS are Missing in the Network Folder. This does not always work though. "IF NOT", then follow below. Also how to set up sharing between PC's and Users below.

Also make sure these 2 below will already be running as they should be, even though they are set to manual, no need to bother with them if they are running. IF NOT, change them to Automatic and Start them.

SSDP Discovery

UPnP Device Host

Now go to:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features>>Turn Windows Features On or Off

Find SMB 1.0 CIFS File Sharing Support (Expand)

ONLY select "Tick Box", SMB 1.0 CIFS client, OK

>>Restart PC

Question for seahawks65: When you refer to icons missing from the Network folder, are you actually referring to the entries (i.e. computers, etc.) represented by icons, or just the icons?

At first, I skipped over your discussion entry in the forum because my problems are more serious than whether icons appear beside entries listed in a folder. Then I opened up and skimmed your post. Now, I'm hoping it might help with home network problems, after I take time to carefully reread your entire post.

I wonder how many of the hundreds of other Windows 10 users with similar network problems (related to recent updates) might also be overlooking your discussion post because the subject appears to deal only with icons.

Wow, impressive post!

What if there has never been a Homegroup established?
I am still using Workgroup instead of Homegroup.

Maybe you've got a hint for me.

Here is the situation:

There are several machines in my WORKGROUP, but only one (LIAN-LI) is showing up in Explorer.

The machines not listed under Network are accessible by typing their sharename into the addressbar eg. \\<ipaddress>\sharename or simply by "net use".

It's just that those other machines (Windows 10 prof. latest release) are not showing in Network.

As said I could map them as shared drives with a letter. But I'd rather have them appear under network to be able to browse them PCs instead of a bunch of single drive-shares.

As a "dangerous" simplicity all other PC's got read/write assigned to group Everyone.

Any hints?

When you select a drive to share, it is located in the network folder under the PC that the drives are connected to and shared through.

Well that's what I was aiming at, but neither the drive-shares nor the PC icons are appearing.
After issuing a successful manual drive map (\\ip-address\sharename) or (net use k: \\ip-address\sharename) the icons appear in the explorer window for as long the "this" explorer-window is open. After closing and reopening the explorer the icons are gone. To make them icons reappear the manual drive map has to be issued again.

This happens to the 3 PCs on the same network segment, running the same OS Version. SMB1 is disabled on all other machines.

For example:

3 Machines, the besaid "LIAN-LI", then machine "TP-W701" and machine "C".

Explorer displays "LIAN-LI" on all 3 machines under "Network". That's perfectly fine.

However explorer does not display machines "TP-W701" and "C" on any of them 3 machines.

-A-

In explorer on machine "TP-W701" click "LIAN-LI", all drives are shown without explicitly invoking a share command which is fine since the drives are already shared using the menu option "Give access to --> advanced sharing".

On machine "TP-W701", open Powershell, Get-SmbConnection

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-SmbConnection

ServerName ShareName UserName            Credential          Dialect NumOpens
---------- --------- --------            ----------          ------- --------
LIAN-LI    ll-data2  TP-W701\<username>  TP-W701\<username>  3.1.1   3

Perfect (we know there is no SMB1 involved).

-B-

The other way around. Access TP-W701 from LIAN-LI is possible by only invoking the UNC path \\TP-W701\

(each machine has a proper FQDN in their hosts file) ...

... and/or by mapping drives r: and s: by means of "net use".

Strange thing is that explorer does NOT show:

- the mapped drives under "Network"

- the Computers being accessed (marked yellow) do not show in the right pane, marked to show details (or any other display option for items).

The Yellow marked machines should be dislayed on the right pane.

The command "net use" shows the active drive maps (picture below).

(There is also drive R: mounted as an NSF share.)

-C-

So now after closing and reopening the explorer this appears:

Under "Network" the machine TP-W701 just disappeared,

likewise the NFS share \\192.168.1.41 to NAS1.

-D-

All this is very odd and I am certain there is something wrong.

I believe the available machines should be listed under "Network" and browseable in the right pane.

I've double checked the "advanced sharing options" to be equal on all Windows 10 machines.

Each machine has the same user equally defined. There is noone else on this network.

I've restarted the WSD service, checked Winows logs for any clues or hints, nada.

I even have reset the network on each machine:

netsh advfirewall reset

netsh int ip reset

netsh int ipv6 reset

netsh winsock resetBut, NO change!

What else could/should be done?

I would assume that a little thingy somewhere in the registry is causing this.

Any hints?

Why do you TROLL MY Discussions. This is not a QUESTION THREAD. You must be desperate for attention.

Read the Updated - May 2018 Section in this Thread.

your directions were perfect.

I have a total of 5 computers on my network, 2 windows 8 and 3 windows 10.

after the last Microsoft update the windows 10 boxes stopped being identified as part of the network.  I went through your sequence as written (followed the instructions!) and it worked

everything is back up..

thank you.

Larry

Awesome and You are Welcome!

:)

Thanks so much for that, I haven't been able to see the W10 computer on the network since the April update (before that it was hit and miss).  It's working now and hopefully will stay that way!!  Vic
MS just pushed 1803 to my household of computers and network connections broke on one of my laptops, which co longer detect the mothership computer (and connected shares).  Easy fix to implement and now the "blind" can see all the other computers on the network and is working normally again.  THANK YOU!

This worked PERFECTLY.  NW went from 1 of 3 machines (all running win10 home) seeing other computers, to all 3 seeing each other.
