Can't connect to a particular wifi network

laptop running Win 10 18362.

Wifi Adaptor: Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn

I have a newly installed internet connection with a new router. I can connect to the wifi using all my other devices but not the laptop, but I can connect to all other networks using this laptop.

The wifi just doesn't show up in the available networks GUI or on running the "netsh wlan show networks" command, but it shows up fine and connects to all other devices.

It connects when I use a lan cable.

It is not a range issue as the laptop can detect and connect to much weaker networks. For some reason won't detect this particular network. What to do?

Hi oh_i_forgot

Is that new router set to 5Ghz rather than 2.4Ghz?

If so you may need to switch that to 2.4Ghz, because your Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn is not dual band and does not support 5Ghz networks . . .

Hi DaveM121, Thanks for your response.

It is a dual band router. so broadcasting at both 2.4 and 5 GHz. In fact all other devices get 2 separate SSIDs. I disabled the 5 GHz broadcast but it still won't show up on the laptop.

Hi oh_i_forgot

Click your Start Button, type cmd and choose Command Prompt

Run this command and hit Enter:

ipconfig /flushdns

Close Command Prompt

Open the Settings App

Go to Network and Internet

Click the Network Reset button

Wait for your PC to automatically restart after 5 minutes

Than check to see if that new Router shows up in the list of available networks . . .

I had done the network reset before posting. I did it once again, after flushing the dns this time, but still no luck man.

Hi Oh I forgot,
probably your pc receives the wi-fi signal on a disturbed or very attenuated radio channel. Access the router via another device, go to the wireless settings and change the wi-fi radio channel
If you use the 2.4 GHz band, try setting a fixed channel choosing between 1.6 or 11.

Hello! I am an Independent Advisor, I would love to help you out!

I would recommend following the suggestion by Franco.

Another question. How far away from the router is the laptop? If you bring it right next to the router does it still not find the network?

Hello Franco and Thagstrom.

Sorry I went to sleep. Yes I did consider changing the channel but the ONT+Router is provided by the ISP and many settings are can only be changed through the backend. I have been talking to customer service. Lets see what happens.

To Thagstrom's question: Yes. It still doesn't detect the network even if the router is right next to it.

For the time being I have set my old router as an access point right next to the new one and have been using the wifi through that. Later in the week, I'll string a long lan cable to my desk.

Thank you guys for all the help

Hi Oh I forgot,
if you can't make changes to the ONT router, at least try to turn it off and turn it back on after a few minutes. Also restart the PC.
