where are bookmarks stored in windows 10

where are bookmarks stored in windows 10?  Why is it so hard to get a simple answer?

Bookmarks are "stored" in the Registry, just like in Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, etc., etc.

Hey J ROBERT,

Bookmarks in the Edge browser ....click on the 3 staked lines aka the hamburger right upper screen, then click the star.  If you want to bookmark a site when using Edge, click the star button, then click ADD.

That's all there is to it.

Regards,

Wayne

Bookmarks are not part of the operating system; they're part of a web browser. Each web browser stores bookmarks in its own way.

For example, in Microsoft Edge your bookmarks are are stored in the so-called hamburger menu in the upper right corner. It's an icon with three horizontal lines. Click on that to open the Hub (it's official name) and once the Hub is open notice the star symbol on the left. That's where Microsoft Edge stores its bookmarks (which Microsoft calls Favorites.)

Other web browsers store their bookmarks differently.

For IE, bookmarks are generally referred to as "Favorites" instead and they are stored as individual url files in, by default, C:\Users\YourUserName\Favorites.

So, as the others have already said, it all depends on which browser you are referring to.

If you are asking "where are Edge bookmarks physically stored in windows 10".... then answer is a bit complex.   Microsoft Edge no longer stores its favorites as individual files and folders like you've become accustomed to with Internet Explorer.   Instead they are now stored in a database (and not in the registry)

The location of this database is provided below.  But that might not be all that relevant, since you can't use the File Explorer to view, copy, rename, delete, sort, or otherwise manage your favorites.

Microsoft intends that you'd use the Edge application to perform all of the favorites management functions.   There are alternative management technique available via a 3rd-party application.  So, let us know if you're interested in that too.

The database is stored in a folder at:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\MicrosoftEdge\User\Default\DataStore\Data\nouser1\120712-0049\DBStore

...on the other hand, if you're NOT talking about Edge and their physical location... you can safely ignore everything that I wrote!
