Can't watch youtube videos in Windows 10 on any internet browser?

Hello everyone! I am having a strange issue with windows 10, whereas whether using google chrome, firefox, internet explorer 11, or Microsoft edge, I can't seem to watch any videos from youtube. I either get a message from youtube that says an error occurred, or the audio plays but I get a black screen. Please help.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

  • Do you have any other problems with video playback from any other programs?

Based on the issue description, it appears that you are having issues in watching videos and accessing YouTube in internet explorer 10.

I can understand the inconvenience caused to you. I will certainly help you out with this issue.

Here are few troubleshooting methods that you may try in order to fix the issue.

Method 1: Internet Explorer No add-ons mode and check.

  1. Press the Windows Key and the R key simultaneously to get the Run prompt.
  2. In the Run prompt, type iexplore -extoff and press enter.
  3. This will open Internet Explorer in no add-ons mode.
  4. Check the issue.

Manage add-ons in Internet Explorer and check.

Method 2: Install Adobe flash player.

For videos that require Adobe flash add-ons, issues can be resolved by updating the add-ons to the latest version. The following troubleshooting steps may help to resolve the issue:

  1. Update to the latest version of Adobe Flash

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

    2. In some cases it may be necessary to uninstall Adobe Flash from your installed programs list and then reinstall the latest version.

Method 3: I would suggest you may try updating the latest graphic card drivers and check if that fixes the issue. Visit the manufacturer’s website and install the drivers.

  1. Drag the mouse to bottom left corner and right-click on the ‘Start icon’.
  2. Select ‘Device manager’.
  3. Right-click on the ‘Video card’ and click on ‘Update driver software’.

Hi, I can't watch youtube videos in Edge or IE 11. I get the black box the video should show in, and I can press play. Then I get sound but no picture in either browser.

It works fine for Firefox.

My boyfriend is even worse on his PC, he cant even see the you tube video box embedded.

I have tried all the above steps (using IE without add-ons - still does not work, I have the latest adobe flash, graphic card driver is up to date.)

Also added shockwave.

Still no picture for you tube in either browser.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

I was mistaken about shockwave. I was able to fix my video by using a Windows 8.1 video driver, rather than the Windows 10 driver that auto installs with the upgrade.

Most computers use Nvidia or AMD video cards. After downloading windows 10. Windows 10 will install the newest AMD driver for AMD video card users. The problem is that AMDs download page will say your video card (especially older ones) are compatible with the new driver, but they are not. if you have an AMD video card and have the video issue. Uninstall the windows 10 video driver. Then install one compatible with your previous version of windows.

In example,

I have an AMD 7000 series video card. Windows 10 auto installed AMD driver 15.7 for windows 10. The driver would not completely install and says it works with my card. I found a forum at AMD with other people having the same problem. The AMD  tech rep told us about the incompatibility. AMD is aware but is not informing anyone who is not asking. He asserted we uninstall the windows 10 diver and let windows update figure out what driver to use after uninstalling. The original poster did so only to have windows update reinstall the same problematic driver.  Another poster decided to use an earlier driver and it worked. I did the same and it worked. I uninstalled driver 15.7 for windows 10 and installed driver 15.6 for windows 8.1.

Version numbers aside. Windows 10 replaces your computers previous video driver on installation. Your video card may not work with the new driver. Uninstall the new windows 10 driver and find one that works for your; 1) video card, 2) previous version of windows the computer was using.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

None of them worked, but helped me to find the solution:

I went to IE : Options - Advanced - Accelerated graphics and I checked the box next to "use software rendering instead of GPU rendering"

It worked.

Thank you Tyree Jordan for putting the incompatible graphics card idea in my head!

I only changed it in IE, but Edge started working straight away.

I am happy again!

Hi, I'm having the same problem. It's also occurred only after I've updated to windows 10 except my computer won't play ANY video files. New and old videos I've put onto my computer from my windows phone won't play either. I sometimes get audio but the screen remains black. None of the above solutions worked for me.

Had trouble playing videos on Chrome and Edge. To fix it, I uninstalled Shockwave Flash from my computer, and then reinstalled Chrome.
