Windows 10 Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable message when trying to add Printer

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my Microsoft Surface 3. Since the upgrade I have been unable to print to the HP 8610 Network Printer at work.

When I try to add the printer under "Add Printer" in Excel or Word I get a message that says "Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable," and my only option is to press 'Ok' to continue.

Weird thing is, I have an HP printer at home (different model) that work just fine. Also, I'm able to Scan from the 8610 using the HP Scan and Capture Windows 8 App.

The printer shows up in Device and Printers and when I troubleshoot it it tells me it can't find any problems. I've tried removing and adding the printer to no avail. Help!

Hi,

Let's try these steps and check if it helps.

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Select Printers.
  4. Right-click on Add Printer.
  5. Select Run as Administrator.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to run the Printer troubleshooter and check if it helps.

a) Press Windows and X key together and select Control Panel.

b) Click on Troubleshooting.

c) Click on View all option on the left side of the Windows.

d) Click on Printer option.

e) Click on Next and follow the onscreen instructions to troubleshoot the issue.

You may also try installing the latest printer drivers from the manufacturer's website and check.

Please update us with the status. We will be glad to assist you.

I've tried both of these solutions and, unfortunately, neither of them help.

When I try the first one I cannot right click on 'Add a Printer.' Only left clicking works.

When I try the second one, it says it can't find any issues.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the HP website along with their HP Support Assistant Software. It cannot detect a problem either.

I attempted to Add a Printer using it's IP address or Hostname. Using the help option on the printer itself I was able to obtain the hostname of the device. When I type that into the Add a Printer Wizard it thinks about it for a minute, tells me the driver for that printer is already installed, asks me if I want to use that driver or a different one, then, when I choose an option it tells me it cannot install the printer.

After posting my last reply, I went into the Add a Printer Wizard again and it naturally recognized my printer. I clicked on it and told it add it. It said it was installing it and acted like it was going to work. When it finished, it asked me if I wanted to set it as default and gave me an option to Print a Test Page. I attempted to print the test page but nothing happened. Then, I chose the option to set it as the default printer and get the response indicted below...

Now I'm back to square one as the printer is listed in Devices and Printers, I can use the HP app to scan from it, but cannot print anything to it at all.

Another weird thing I've noticed is that when I right click on the printer in Devices and Printers, it doesn't show printer options, it only shows scanner options (Start scan, Scan profiles, Scan properties) as if my Surface thinks the device is only a scanner despite the current drivers and software being installed.

I know the printer works because the Mac that's connected to it can print to it just fine.

I have the same problem as above.  My electrical system fused in the middle of working.  Everything came back as normal, but when I went to print later in the day I got the same result as those above.  The weird thing is that my scanner, which is a brother inkjet printer, works as a scanner but I can't get the system to recognise it as a printer.  Nor does it work with the other printers on the network.

Any ideas.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem Adam. I left to visit family one weekend and came back unable to print anything from my surface pro. My girlfriend has the exact same machine, but is able to print just fine from my printer. Have either of you discovered a solution?

I just got off the phone with microsoft tech services. They were able to solve the issue for me.

1. Search "device manager" in your start menu.

2. Scroll to "Printers" and expand.

3. Right click on the printer you are having trouble with, and click "Update Driver Software...".

4. Click "Search automatically for update driver software".

5. Click the one that under description shows your HP printer model with "Series Class Driver" at the end.

6. Click next.

Hope this helps!

j4morrow,

I've actually tried to update the driver several times using a couple of different methods. I went ahead and tried your steps here anyways just in case. When I open device manager there is not "Printers" option to expand. Weird since I do have a printer at home that's installed and works just fine.

Which OS are you using? My problems seems to have started when I upgraded to Windows 10.

I tried most of the above with no success.   Then I found a note on another site which said that I needed to restart the print spooler (I'm on a home network) so I did that (you can search Microsoft Help and it will tell you how to do it - it appears to be software version dependant) and it worked, and has been no trouble since.
