USB DRIVES NOT WORKING WITH WINDOWS 10 UPDATE

Hi

Can anyone help i have tried everything. My laptop Packard Bell Easynote TE has recently done an update on Windows 10 and now the USB ports dont work, although an iphone works. It wont recognize a USB memory stick  or more importantly my external hard drive - Samsung M3 portable  1TB.

The drivers for these are missing and the laptop will not detect them.  I paid for AVG driver and that updated some drivers but not what I need.  In device manager there is a yellow triangle against any USB stick i add.

I just need a link to the right driver to download as all I keep getting is driver software that scans my laptop and then wants to charge me!

Thanks for your help

Caroline

Attach this drive in another computer and verify whether the drive is working or not, If working or you are sure that drive is allright -

Assuming that there is no hardware problem with your USB stick -

1. Right click on Windows Start > Device Manager > Click the topmost entry i.e. your device > Click Action in Menu > Click Scan for hardware changes
Now you should be able to see your USB drive

2, Right click on Windows Start > Device Manager > Expand Disk Drive > Locate the Drive > Right click on this > Uninstall > Reboot your computer

3. Use the Hardware & Devices Troubleshooter

Right click on Windows Start > Click Disk Management > If you see your Drive is listed there but there is no Drive Letter > Right Click it > Click Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add > Click Assign the following drive Letter > Click in the Drive Letter List Box > Choose an appropriate Drive Letter > OK > OK

5: Fix USB Root Hub
Windows Key+X > Click Device Manager > Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers > Right-click USB Root Hub option and click Properties > Go to Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK. > If you have more than one USB Root Hub, repeat this step for all

6. Update / Reinstall Generic USB Hub
Windows Key+X > Click Device Manager > Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers > Right click on USB Hub > Select Update Driver Software > Browse my computer for driver software > Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > From the list, select Generic USB Hub > Next and follow onscreen instructions > Reboot your Computer

Ciao Caroline,

Regarding your question, you can find your most recent drivers here:

http://www.packardbell.com/pb/en/GB/content/dow...

Just click on "Auto detect serial number", install the requested application, follow instructions and your printer will be automatically detected and drivers shown.

Please let me know if this helped somehow.

It sounds like the USB ports are working but the issue may be in the registry for disk drives.

Can you check the following registry key?:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

At that registry key, in the right window, is there a "Name" UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters?

If so, what is "Data" for those Names?

For Windows 10 there should be an UpperFilters value PartMgr which is required and the default.

Are there any other UpperFilters or LowerFilters values?

Hi

Thanks for replying.  I have tried most of this the last 2 days but have gone back through it all and rebooted.  I wasn't sure on 4 i cant see the device listed?  On 6 I dont have the option to select Generic USB Hub?

Both the usb stick and the external hard drive are under ' Other Devices' and both have a yellow triangle next to them, so it seems to be the driver software they need.

That is normal and the default so the issue does not appear to be at that registry key.

Can you do the following:

In the Device Manager click on a device with a yellow triangle.

Under the "General" tab what does it say under "Device status"

The click on the "Details" tab and choose "Class Guid" in the drop-down menu under "Property"

What is listed under "Value" ?
