USB 3.0 external hard drive can't mount after window 10 update to version 1902 & 1903

Hi

I have two external hard drive one of them is WD My Passport  and another one is Samsung .

after I updated all my PCs , Laptops and workstations (all of them are HP devices ) to newer windows 10 version 1902 &1903, I couldn't managed anything  with my external HDDs event though these device were connected with USB 3.0 to computers as well as I can find out them in Control Panel-Devices &  Printers as new connected devices but after one minutes the icons got warning that means "the mass storage device have problem" also you can see this warning on the target USB port on Control Panel-Devices . despite of hearing connect and disconnect beep devices are not get drive letter to show up in my computer window . the HDDs LED is static without any wick to develop correct installation , so it explain OS communication is weak and not correctly with this devices.

I checked even computer disk management but no sign of any external devices there. of course I tried many options like updating bios, hardware driver update , USB port changing ,checked registry value of ports, download Western Digital My passport drivers, repair system files with specified software which users recommended in forums but none of them respond.

the only method I can run my devices is I used a USB 2  cable convertor to sit between HDD and computer USB ports.

on that time I understood if I connect directly HDDs to usb2 port or using usb2 cable convertor my issue will be solved.but it is only alternative method  not a right solution .in view of the fact that my computers doesn't have usb2 ports expect on of my embedded PCs .

I will be glad if give me a good solution or notify me that,it is an universal problem of the newest update or only of lack of some minor features .

Hi,

You probably need to update the BIOS, chipset drivers, and ALL the USB drivers from HP. All of those can affect the USB platform.

Check with HP Support, their on-line docs and drivers, and ask in their forums about any known issues.

First you will need to update the BIOS, chipset drivers, and other USB drivers available at HP.

More if needed :

After that you "might" then get an "Access Denied" or "Lack of Permissions" message. If so you will need to HP Client Security and disable "Just in time authentication" or set as you need. It is probably set at the default of Permit - Just in time Authenication.

Be sure to ask HP Support and Forums as their models often have special issues with new major releases of Windows 10.

If all your drivers are newer that means that the versions Microsoft has are newer than the ones posted on the HP site which is not that unusual if you have an older HP computer. It would be a good idea to contact HP support just in case there is a known issue with a fix.

What is your exact HP model?

Did you specifically look for BIOS, chipset drivers, and USB drivers at HP?

Are your running any 3rd party antivirus/security programs? If so some of those can cause havoc with USB especially after a major Windows 10 revision.

Though I do not usually recommend an automatic driver update program, due to possible complications, this one may help in this case as sort of a last ditch option, Try SlimDrivers - Free which is a cloud based solution for driver updates and might help. Be sure to make a Restore Point before running.

Start - type in --> Restore
Find at top and click on - Create

Unfortunately, some older computers get dropped from Windows 10 compatibility as Windows 1o goes forward. I have a older Toshiba that used to run Windows 10 fine and now will not run it since 1803. So I had to revert it back to Windows 8.1.

BTW, what version of Windows are you running on that computer? And what environment?

If it is on a Business network, running Windows Server, then you need to be checking with Microsoft's TechNet, which is Microsoft's official support forums for Business, large scale networks, and server setup networks. because I have many PCs I try everything separately.

and of course I specially update bios, chipsets and  all drivers one by one even by driver solution pack online.

fortunately all my experience are test on new installation windows ISOs.

it mean no antivirus or extra firewall not run.

I contacted WD support and HP support too

but no answer yet  .

I am guessing both WD My Passport and Windows 10 are not correctly mach by USB 3.0 ports.

but with use USB 2 ports or USB 2 cable convertor the issue is ok.

the most important PCs model which I use are :

1.laptop model : HP ENVY Notebook - 15-k211ne

2.All in one -HP Envy 23 : 23-m210qd

3.All in one -HP Envy 27 : 27-a277d

The exact external hard drive have problem with these PCs.

Here are the latest Windows 10 drivers I found at HP for those :

1. HP ENVY Notebook - 15-k211ne <-- this is set at Windows 10 64 Bit so change as needed. The drivers for that system date back to as far as Windows 7. The latest BIOS - F.57 Rev.A Dec 6, 2018 - there is a "Detect mu Drivers" button to automatically check for updates is you are on this computer.
https://support.hp.com/emea_middle_east-en/driv...

I would also run the Intel Driver & Support Assistant since the system using Intel chipsets.

Intel Driver and Support Assistant
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support...

2. HP Envy 23 : 23-m210qd - there are no Windows 10 drivers for this system - latest on their site is Windows 8.1 64 bot which means it could definitely have problems running Windows 10. It also runs Intel chipsets so you could try running the Intel Driver & Support Assistant for it as well to see if that can find updates. Can not use "Detect my Drivers" for this system as there are no Windows 10 drivers.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservic...

3. HP Envy 27 : 27-a277d - there are several BIOS and chipset as well as other driver updates. There is a "Detect my Drivers" button. Afterwards you can run the Intel Driver and Support Assistance (again afterwards).
https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservic...

If those do not help them you need HP's support and it would be a good idea to check with the support for those external USB drives.

Here to help,

Rob

BTW, there is another slight possibility at play here - especially true of older computers and All-in-Ones (though the issue can be on any computer). Not all USB ports on a computer are the same as far as available power is concerned, And even those that are powered may not have sufficient power for external drives (especially older models). Added that the USB power circuitry weakens over a period of time.

So I would try a powered USB Hub - one that plugs into A/C and can supply power to USB Devices while linking them to a computer's USB ports. I use these on all of my computers because it both solves the port access problem as well as providing adequate power for a host of hungry USB devices.

Hope that helps,

Rob

In this week I try another AIO , Laptop and assemble case brands like MSI or Asus  , the result is :

only when install new windows 10 pack in version 1903 or update machines to 1903 Western Digital My Passport external HDDs can't mount on operation system directly just need a convertor usb2 cable.

previous windows 10 version 1809 is worded with HDD as well as past.

I  proposed this issue in many support forums like HP , Microsoft , WD and many general sites but I received only same answer with repeated solution .

I am sure right now  this update make some interference with external devices that doesn't allowed system mount drive correctly even though device is connected or it is identified .

some how this is a big BUG in this major update.
