No sound from internal speakers. Dell laptop. Windows 10

I have a Dell M5040 laptop running on Windows 10.   Recently I noticed the red cross on the speaker icon on the taskbar and no sound from internal speakers.

After reading a lot of useful advice I still have not come across my specific problem anywhere and so I am writing this.  When I go to Device Manager and look at sound devices one of them is missing (the IDT high definition audio codec)  The AMD HDMI device is still there and I can get sound to my television through the HDMI port fine.  Most of the advice I have read centres around updating drivers.   But if the actual device is not there what can I do?  Any help would be most gratefully received.

There are no Windows 10 native drivers for this model, but you can download and install the following driver to see if it works:

https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER00875675M/9/Au...

I also don't see this model listed as certified compatible with Windows 10:

Thanks for answering my question.  I downloaded the driver and "unzipped" it.  My computer tried to install it but said that the hardware detected is not supported by the IDT software.  I suppose my real question is - what audio device is on my laptop and why is it not showing in audio playback devices in device manager?   thanks for your time.

Well I've just tried that (from device manager) but nothing happened.  Do you think it could be an actual physical hardware problem?

I think its a compatibility issue and what you should do is reinstall Windows 7 and stick with that release.

I really like Win10 and apart from this sound issue it works well.  So I have decided to use the HDMI output to a TV on the infrequent times I actually need sound.

I would like to thankyou very much for your responses and advice.

Thank  you.
