New Version of the Kinect (for Xbox One) Driver and the 3D Scan app

Hello users of Microsoft’s ‘3D Scan’ app!

We wanted to inform you that starting this weekend we will be launching a new version of our 3D Scan app (version 2.0.46.0) and people that have the app installed will see the update show up on their computers soon thereafter.

**IMPORTANT**

The new version of the app requires a new Kinect (for Xbox One) driver to work with your computer and will not be able to scan without it. Additionally the old version of the app will not scan with the new driver. (You can read more about the exciting new Kinect driver announcement here)

The new Kinect driver must also be installed manually. To install the new driver follow the steps below:

  1. In Cortana type ‘Device Manager’ and hit enter
  2. Find ‘Kinect sensor devices’ in the list
  3. Expand everything under ‘Kinect sensor devices’ (this should expose ‘WDF KinectSensor Interface 0’)
  4. Right click on ‘WDF KinectSensor Interface 0’ and select ‘Update driver’
  5. There should be a popup window that asks “How do you want to search for drivers?”
    1. Choose “Search automatically for updated driver software”
  6. Assuming all goes well, you should have just installed the new driver. Right clicking on ‘WDF KinectSensor Interface 0’ again and selecting ‘Properties’ should show you that you have driver version ‘2.2.1610.17001’ or greater
  7. If all does not go well and you did not get the new updated driver with the version listed above, remember that the driver takes time to filter through our backend system and be visible to all locations around the globe. If this happens, please be patient and try the same steps listed above at a later time.

For any issues regarding installing the new Kinect driver please let us know by commenting below.

If you have any feedback for, or issues with, the new 3D Scan app please leave your comments in the Feedback hub (Category: ‘Hardware, Devices, and Drivers’, Subcategory: ‘3D Scan’)

Thanks!

Finally I could install the new version. Now I can not do good quality scans. With the previous version always came out well and now they are all low resolution. What happened?

Driver installed, all new features work for me.

There could be a Kinect startup bug that exploits when computer is turned on and boot completes (fast startup is disabled via control panel).

In this scenario, maybe the Kinect camera does not startup in time, so windows hello advises on lock screen to instead login with PIN.

However, after swiping up the lock screen, the login screen now requires the PIN but it also includes the windows hello option (maybe Kinect HW has now started up successfully???) and, if activated, windows hello works!!!

It just looks like as a slow Kinect HW startup or that windows hello, looking for a camera, gives up too soon.

Matias,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

Could you give us more detail as to what is happening with your scans with the new driver and 3D Scan app?

Are you having lower geometry resolution, lower texture resolution, or incomplete scans that lose object detail?

With more detail we will be able to help you troubleshoot better.

Thanks!

Hi, this is a scan with the older version.and this is with the new one.

Matias,

It looks like you need to adjust your 'Depth' setting.

One of the big upgrades we gave to the new version of the scan app was to add a live preview. Before you start scanning you can see what the Kinect sees. Everything that is in color the Kinect sees, and when the scan starts, the scan will collect data on anything that is in color. Everything that is gray will not show up in your scan.

What you can do is hold up your hand and slowly move it away from the Kinect. When your hand turns gray, that is how far (how deep) the Kinect will see (and collect data). Adjust your depth until your hand turns gray a little bit past what you want to scan.

Make sure you don't set the depth too high, because if the Kinect sees the wall, or other stationary objects behind you, it might ruin your scan.

Let me know if this works.

Thanks!

thanks! I was able to do a better scan. I depend a lot on finding the right light to get good frame rates. I still think the resolution is not as good as the previous one. Can I control the scanner resolution? I am using a macbook pro (bootcamp) 16gb ram, i7, AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2T memory.

Thanks!

In the new version of 3D Scan the resolution is internally set to full. We haven't exposed the setting to the user yet, but will consider adding it in the future.

Thanks for your feedback!

You're welcome. I Usually scan a little below the maximum resolution for better frame rates. I´ll keep in touch

Thanks!

UPDATE: I fixed my issue. The app didn't have access to the camera in my camera privacy settings.

Hey. I have the latest driver, which is the same version as pictured above, but the app cannot connect to the sensor. Other kinect apps detect it fine.

I have windows 10 and an old version and I cannot update by searching online. It says it has best one already.  The driver I have is from 2014
