iPhone is not detected by Windows 10 and does not appear in device manager/devices yet charges

Last night I was messing with iTunes to try and get some extra songs onto my phone when everything stopped working. For some reason, Windows 10 stopped recognizing my iPhone as a device. It no longer showed up in Explorer and even in devices//devices manager any mention of my iPhone disappeared.

I tried different cables to no avail. It IS recognized on other computers though.

I uninstalled iTunes and all Apple software then reinstalled iTunes - no fix.

I tried disabling and restarting the Apple Mobile services. Nothing.

The Apple USB driver is nowhere to be found in the Device Manager yet is present on my hard drive in the appropriate folder. I tried installing the driver manually but it did not change anything even after multiple reboots.

Other USB devices are recognized with no problem.

I asked on Apple who referred me back to you as it is a Windows issue.

Also, when plugged into my computer, the disc activity light flashes as if the computer is trying to read or find a new device but cannot. And when I manually force Windows to find a new device, it finds a bar code/QR code reader app on my phone which it wishes to add as a video device! Clearly Windows KNOWS something is plugged into the computer but cannot figure out what.

Also, it does not give me any mentions of unspecified devices nor do I have any unspecified portable devices. Even if I allow hidden devices to appear in devices/device manager. Actually, that's not true. There WERE hidden (inactive) iPhone icons but I removed them in hopes of getting my computer to once again recognize the device  - sort of like uninstalling/reinstalling.

Hi Horgh,

The recent use of the application may have affected the connection settings, thus causing the error of your mobile device not to be recognized on your PC. To sort your concern, we suggest that you manually sync your driver by following these steps:

  1. Ensure to install the latest PC application for your mobile.
  2. Once installed, open Control Panel.
  3. Select Hardware and Sound.
  4. Select Device and Printers.
  5. Your mobile device should be displayed on the Unspecified section. If not, ensure that you've selected trust this PC on your device.
  6. Right-click and select Properties.
  7. Select Hardware tab and click the Properties button.
  8. Under General tab, select the Change settings button.
  9. Select Driver tab.
  10. Select Update Driver.
  11. Select Browse my computer for driver software.
  12. Select Browse, then locate your mobile device driver on the C:\ drive.
  13. Click Next.

Once you're done, launch the application and check if the device is recognized.

Let us know should you need further assistance.

Again, as I said before, I did a clean install of iTunes and tried other alternatives but my PC refuses to acknowledge the existence of anything although the HD activity light flashes when I plug my phone into the USB.

There are no unspecified devices nor any attempts at getting drivers - which already exist on my PC and which I have updated and tried reinstalling many times.

I feel as though something my have happened at the registry level.

I solved my problem by turning on the tethering function on my phone. Apparently this kickstarted Windows into installing the driver and getting my phone recognized as a device.

Odd indeed, but perhaps some of you Microsoft folks could us that info to look into how Windows 10 interacts with Apple products.

I got down to step 12.........but then couldn't find the mobile device driver listed.  But wasn't exactly sure what I should have been looking for.  What would it say?  Apple mobile device?......or mobile device driver?

Hi,

We would like to verify if you have the same issue with Horgh above. Have you tried connecting the iPhone to another computer? If so, are you are getting the same issue?

We look forward to your response.

Hi when i plug my iphone6plus into my windows 10 pc either nothing happens or i get an error message “The last USB device you connected malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it”.

There is no Apple Device anywhere in Device Manager including in Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

When i plug the iphone in and there is no error messsge - device manager shows nothing - nor is anything listed in unspecified devices view.

When i get an error messsge Device Manager lists “unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)”

I Have tried other cords and also a different pc - same results.

I also tried Apple approach that involves opening Mobile Device support\Drivers and right clicking on usbaap164 file - no change to problem.

Final 2 actions / complete uninstall of itunes on pc as per Apple instructions and reinstall - no change including when i repeated usbaap step above.

last action to date / reset location settings on iphone in hope this would prompt a “do you trust this pc” message in case this was a problem / nothing happened.

i’m wondering if there is even an apple driver on my pc?

Really need your help - need to back up phone and then use this to set up new iphone 8.

We are here BECAUSE we just want to transfer pics and movies from iPhone to Win 10 laptop (like many of had done no prob BEFORE Win 10!).

My fix was install iTunes, plug in iPhone it should "install device" automatically and will from then on it will appear as a device.

I quickly easily routinely transferred pics from iPhone DCIM folder to laptop using file explorer like moving any other files...

BUT if you're like me you don't want/need 400M of intrusive iTunes (just like we don't need Cortana to tell us everything or bing to show us everything!!!)

I found if I deinstall iTunes, the ability to recognize the iPhone as a device remains.
