How do you safely remove a USB drive in Windows 10 ?

For windows 7, 8, and 8.1 I had an icon near my clock on the taskbar.

For windows 10, that icon is not there.

So how do I safely remove a usb drive on a Windows 10 computer?

The icon you are looking for looks like the one on the left here:

But unless you have set your disk drive for Better performance you will not have the icon, and safe removal is not required, just unplug the device when you have finished with it.

You don't have a "Show hidden icons"-arrow? If yes, click on this.

Has anyone figured out how to do this ('safely remove USB') in tablet mode? Its annoying to have to switch to desktop mode to safely remove a drive, etc.

(I've got a memory stick that stays lit and external HDs that keep spinning, even when I'm sure they must be done by now, but I don't want to risk corrupting the data so try to use 'safe removal' whenever possible.)

As a general rule, you can simply unplug USB devices without going through the Safely Remove process. "Quick Removal," as shown in Alan Russell's Sep. 12, 2015 post, is the default setting.

But what if you want to be sure your device is set for "Quick removal" and not "Better performance"? On our Windows 10 systems, I didn't see the Policies tab. Well, it is a pretty well hidden. Here are the steps to see it.

1. In Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive and choose Properties.

2. Click: Hardware / USB Device (your drive) / Properties

3. Notice that there is no "Policies" tab. That stumped me for awhile.

"Policies" will appear when you click: Change settings.

3. Click: Policies.  Quick removal is the default. With that setting, you can insert and remove your USB devices quickly!

Finally found the Hidden Icons.  On my Windows 10 it is a downward facing arrow in the upper right

hand of the screen on the same line as time and date.  When I hover over the downward facing arrow it

says   "show hidden icons".  When I see the hidden icons I clicked on the one that looks like a walkie talkie.

Click on that and it says  "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media".  Then click on "Eject Flash Disk E"
