Help! I can't install nvidia display driver on windows 10

Alright, i have quite the peculiar problem. I started off with a clean install of windows. I am now running on windows ver 1709. Basically, I've tried to install the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx 780 gpu, but everytime it's installing, my computer blacks out, restarts, and the driver is not installed. I successfully installed it in safe mode, but when i try to start my computer normally, it wouldn't start, instead, it tells me that windows didn't load correctly. Once this happens, i have no choice but to go back into safe mode, DDU and restart. My gpu fan is still working and the indicator lights are green.

It's as if installing the display driver crashes windows and causes it to not load correctly, and removing it in safe mode allows me to boot normally. If the community could help me so that i can use my gpu normally, that'll be great. Thanks.

Not sure if any of this will help but give all 3 methods a try. Since you have even tried it in safe mode .Do you have Duo GPU chips? Try updating the intel driver first if you do.

It is a buggy driver update from Microsoft. Hope one of these solutions may help you.
Before rebooting download show hide tool from microsoft and hide the bad driver from
reinstalling.I would suggest method 3 as then you can backup your correct driver to usb or cd/dvd.

Method 1

Right click on start menu and open "Device manager", scroll down to "display adapter", double click
 on the adapter shown in display adapter. The dialogue box has 5 tabs - choose driver tab.
Then choose "update driver", then choose "browse my computer", then choose "let me pick",
then choose one of the drivers shown that is not the current driver that windows is using now.

Method 2

From Microsoft
We are aware of a problem that resulted in an incorrect driver update for some
AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 series adapters. The driver update has been
corrected. If you were impacted by the incorrect driver, follow these steps for
all versions of Windows 10 to delete the 22.19.128.0 driver from the system and
recover the recommended driver version (8.970.100.9001): FROM MICROSOFT

1.Start Device Manager. To do this, press and hold (or right-click) the Start Menu icon,
 and then select Device Manager.
2.Expand Display adapters, and right-click the adapter that has the problem driver
installed, and then select Properties.
3.Select the Driver tab and verify driver version is 22.19.128.0.
4.Select Uninstall Device.
5.Check the box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” This step is
important and will prevent the problematic driver from reinstalling in the future.
6.The system may require a reboot at this point. Reboot if needed, then reopen  Device Manager.
7.Select any device, then click Action -> Scan for hardware changes.
8.If the recommended driver (8.970.100.9001) is re-installed and this resolves your graphics
problems, you can stop here. (Repeat steps 1-3 to verify that the correct driver version is installed).
 Otherwise follow the next step to check for the driver using Windows Update.
9.Go to Start -> Settings -> Update & security, then Check for updates and install any available updates

If this does not work then try this

Method 3
suggest downloading the drivers for your device from the Microsoft update catalog or your computer manufacturer
and installing that driver.
1.Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website page at http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com
2. Do a search for your driver for older drivers that are not supported anymore. Or download
from your PC / laptop manufacturer
3.If you are using a laptop or an all-in-one PC you will want the Mobility driver, otherwise
you probably want the one that doesn't include Mobility.
4. If you have a newer driver you were using and windows does not find it then download it
from your computer manufacturer.
•If you are running 32-bit Windows, download the smaller of the two files shown for your device,
 otherwise download the larger.
•Create a new folder in your downloads folder called "Video driver"
•Double click on the CAB file you downloaded to open it and then drag its contents into the
"Video driver" folder. Or run the exe file that you downloaded from your computer manufacturer.
•Go to Device Manager and Display Adapters, select the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, right
click and select Update Driver
•Click on "Browse my computer for driver software"
•Browse to the "Video driver" folder you previously created and press OK and Next
•Hopefully this will install the 2015 version of the drive and you'll be back up and running or
 your computer manufacturers driver
If you find and download your driver . Back it up to a usb or cd/dvd

alright, i've tried the methods but to no avail.

Method 1:

After i click next, the installation progress bar starts to run. several seconds later, my computer blacks out and restart. My GPU is still not in use.

Method 2: not sure if 'm doing it correctly

While i'm using Nvidia, i still tried to uninstall the Microsoft basic display adapter. I can't really find the check box that says, "Delete the driver software for this device.” anyway, after i uninstalled the device, after awhile, the same thing happened. the screen blacks out, and restarts.

Method 3:

At this point, i accidentally clicked update driver automatically, and i had to go through the safe mode, DDU, so that i can boot normally.

anyway, i downloaded an old gtx 780 driver from the catalog. But when navigated to the folder and clicked next on "browse for drivers on your computer", it says the best drivers are already installed.

If there is any additional information i can provide to help in this case, please let me know.

Have you checked your computer manufacturer instead for video adapters? What is the make and model of your computer? A desktop with a graphics card? I s the motherboard amd or intel?

You would be better going with the latest drivers your computer manufacturer has for your computer. I  I have had some problems with drivers for the nvidia chip too in windows 10. Not at first. After creators updates.

. Did you try to retrace the steps involved to get your video driver installed?

Let me know what your make and model of your desktop is. Have you kept up with BIOS updates.. Chipset drivers installed? Did the computer come with windows 7 ,8 or 10?

Do you have 32 bit or 64 bit? That will be important when selecting a driver. Unless you are missing a step? . Did you try safe mode with these instructions?

If we can find them from your computer manufacturer then you might can download their auto update and get the drivers installed that way. The auto updater would stop windows from interfering with a driver update.

Use DDU to remove the old drivers. DO NOT use the Geforce experience, install manually and use the custom install method so you can unselect the GFE and 3D

I hope we can find a solution for you.. Have you run SFC ? DISM? to fix  corruption?

I have been looking at the screenshots you provided. Did you miss this step?

Can you try this in safe mode?

One more thing try doing this offline. That way windows cannot redownload the basic driver. If you do this do you have a system backup or windows ISO in case something goes wrong.?

Have you tried going to nvidia and downloading latest driver from them? Let it detect your device.

Install driver in compatibility mode

  1. Right-click on the driver and select Properties.    
  2. Select Compatibility tab.    
  3. Place a check mark next to Run this program in Compatibility mode and select the operating system accordingly from the drop-down list.
  4. Let the driver install, and then check the functionality.

i ran sfc/scannow in cmd and this was the result

Here is my system information 

I have also downloaded the appropriate drivers from the following websites, and tried to install them. I used the custom install method and selected only the graphics driver.

Based on my graphics card manufacturer: https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GTX780DC23GD5/HelpDesk_Download/

Based on my motherboard manufacturer: https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/H87M%20Pro4/index.us.asp#Download

Based on Nvidia: https://www.geforce.com/drivers

However, it either ends up failing (blacks out, restarts), OR, me having to go into safe mode and DDU away any remnants of the driver. (blacks out, unable to boot into normal mode)

Again, I am able to install the graphics driver in safe mode. However, after it is installed, my computer won't boot up normally. I had to go back into safe mode, DDU.

Compatibility mode result: (i'm not sure what you meant, since i downloaded drivers appropriate to windows 10, 64bit. The exact windows i'm using now is version 1709 (OS build 16299.64) )

While I'm using windows 10 64bit, i did try to run the program in compatibility mode for earlier versions of windows. the nvidia installer simply fails when checking for system compatibility.

Could this simply be a hardware fault? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

One question. Do you use defender? Have you noticed if windows defender pops up when trying to install your driver? I had it block my intel driver update through its controlled folder access. Open  defender from taskbar if you use it. Open virus and threat protection >>open virus and threat protection settings>>scroll down to controlled folder access and switch it off.

Do you have an onboard intel chip on that motherboard?

I am at a loss. I cannot understand why the driver will not install. CPU-z is recognizing your video card. I am not sure if it is a hardware fault. It could be I suppose. Have you tried older drivers in compatibility mode?

If you left the nvidia driver in (not DDU) it away could you then go in to display adapter properties and then choose the update driver , let me pick and choose your driver? Probably this has been tried too I suppose. 

Have you tried asking on Nvidia site to see if there is someone with more experience there that can help?

Please run dxdiag in admin mode type    dxdiag   in search and right click to run as administrator This will show you information about all multimedia drivers installed.

I read in one of the posts here that someone had to do the driver install 9 times before it took.

I would think if your card was working fine before 1709 then it probably isn't a hardware failure. A lot of people had messed up video adapters after 1709 upgrade. Are you able to go  back to 1703. . It would be nice for confirmation. .

Maybe someone else will come along and know more about this than I do. I will keep looking though for a fix . One is bound to turn up somewhere on the internet sometime.  You are not the only person with this card in their computer.

Maybe microsoft will fix this issue. I read today that they had fixed it but then put out a messed up driver again.I won't give up on you  but maybe a more knowledgable person could pipe in.

In the meantime also try running Dism.. Copy and paste this into administrator command prompt.It will take a while to run.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth 

On Microsoft technet I ran across some posts with exact same issues as you. One guy that couldnt roll back to 1703 cause he did a clean install said this>>>>>>>

I tried a lot of stuff so I'm not 100% sure what exactly it was that seemingly resolved my problems, but I'm pretty sure I narrowed it to one of two things:

1. Turned off the game bar entirely by setting "Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game bar" to off.

2. Prevented the new "people" feature from loading at startup. 

Have any of you tried these things? Luckily I have no use for either of these things so I'll just leave them off for now until Microsoft fixes this on their end. I'll report back if I run into the issue again.

Did you first check compatibility of your computer from the make and model manufacturers page for windows 10 FCU.

If you saved 1703 I would roll back and wait until compatibility is reported for your system . Is there an update for the BIOS for your computer? Maybe you can just wait this out to see if Microsoft makes this compatible with a new driver. Or try an older driver in compatibility mode.

A person on this forum has supplied this answer on another thread where a person is having a problem like yours. That is why I had asked you if you had upgraded to 10 from 8. This may be a limitation of your hardware. How long since you installed 1709? Can you go back? Did you save an install disk of 1703?

You should install the latest driver from the Nvidia website for your graphics and not rely on windows update. Make sure you download the latest 388.43, released in November 2017.

What windows update do you refer to. If it was the Fall Creators update then I had to purchase a new video card to regain functionality in Windows 10. You may not have that option.

Update: 

I managed to get a clean install of windows ver 1703 (from windowsiso) and disabled the game recording, game bar stuff. DISM came back 100%. However, the problem persists. I have the latest BIOS according to my motherboard's manufacturer's website. I tried both the latest, as well as a previous version of nvidia driver and both of them gave the same, disappointing results. Also, windows defender does not pop up when i try to install the graphics driver. I too cannot understand why this is happening since i have been using windows 10 prior to this and it worked fine.

Well that is disappointing . So you are on 1703 now and you are still messed up. Can you drop back even further to 1607 ? (was it 1607)? Install the drivers cause I think 1607 was still pretty permissive with drivers. Then see? Then block those driver updates and start updating. After each update make sure they are still blocked. If that is not possible then we will move on.

Take a look at your monitor and see if it is listing the  right monitor . There are some reddit posts about not having the correct monitor showing in device manager. The monitor in almost every case is a LG monitor and it is being speculated that maybe this is part of the problem they cannot get the correct monitor installed because of a windows glitch (whats new) and therefore the driver won't install because the monitor will not support the driver.

This glitch happened after fall creators update  .

I seen it earlier today in a post here. I do wish now that I had saved the url for you. Maybe I will run across it again. A google search may show results for the reddit post. A Microsoft technician was on talking with them and had a page up for them to fill out questions   for them to fill out to help him track down the problem. These were people with nvidia cards in their computer and having the same problems you are..

Do you have notifications on for defender? 

Have you tried any of the windows troubleshooters? Open settings >>update and security and scroll down to the troubleshooters. Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter. Try any of them you think might help. It won't hurt. Sorry if we are going over territory you have already tried. I don't want to seem that I am grasping at straws for you but I think at this point we are..

Anyway the problem has not gone away so it won't hurt to try more troubleshooting.

 Did you try running  DxDiag  ? DxDiag may give us some more troubleshooting tools.   type dxdiag in cortana search bar then right click it to choose to run in admin mode.

There is a way to turn off driver verifier so windows will install unsigned drivers though I doubt your drivers are unsigned.. I have never personally done it but have read that it can be disabled to be able to run a driver that windows doesnt approve of but I don't know if there would be more problems after that.

Microsoft really needs to work on this one fast. There are still a lot of people in your boat . What a freaking mess.

 Ok on a different post I read today  a person said he resolved his problem by not doing a custom install and  but used express settings. Who knows maybe we will get this worked out yet .

On a few other posts some said they had to run the drivers over and over again until it took. One guy ran them 9 times

before the drivers would install.

Another thing since you have switchable graphics (am I correct? ) or two cards? there might be a driver order .I am probably repeating myself by now ..
