Lexmark E350d printer unspecified error with Windows 10

Original title: Lexmark E350d printer error with Windows 10

My Lexmark E350d printer stopped working when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  It worked for a while, but now, whenever I try to print, I get an unspecified error--the "Status" in the print window says "Error - Printing."  I have tried removing the printer and reinstalling, rebooting the computer, unplugging and powering up the printer, I have changed drivers, tried the troubleshooter, nothing seems to work.  I have looked over the various questions on this and other sites and haven't seen this specific one. If I can't fix it I will either have to get a new printer or go back to Windows 7.

Hi,

If you are trying to print in Edge Browser use CTRL + P or click the little 3 dots in
the top right corner (under the "X" then - Print (or other Windows Store Apps).

As OEM Lexmark is responsible for the proper operation of the printer and their
supplied drivers. Check with Lexmark Support, their on-line documentation, and
drivers.

Good chance you need to update or re-install the latest available driver.

Download the latest available drivers from the maker's website. Right Click
the setup.exe (installable file  if a ZIP unpack first) - click properties then
the Compatibility tab. Check Run in Compatibility mode - select the OS
same as your driver.

Thank you for your response. I had tried updating drivers, but that didn't help. I tried reinstalling in 'compatibility mode' and that didn't help either.  I guess I will reach out to Lexmark and see what they have to say.

Did you run the printer troubleshooter (see my previous reply)?

Be sure to check all connections.

Yes, I had run troubleshooter, it wasn't able to find anything.  But I had been using a parallel port (LPT1), as I have a laptop hooked up to the USB (the printer has one of each).  I swapped and connected with the USB port and was able to print.  So the problem seems to be with the parallel port.  It is connected, the document shows up in the printer queue, but with an error.  I need to have both computers connected to the printer, and the laptop only has USB, so I think I need to use the parallel for the desktop, unless there is some workaround that enables me to use the one USB jack on the printer for both computers.  But now I see others have had similar issues with parallel printer ports and Windows 10, so I will see if any of the suggested solutions work.

Hi,

On the desktop you probably have to change the printer driver settings to
use the USB port. Check with Lexmark Support, documentation, and forums
how to do that. (It probably defaults to the LPT port if there is one.)

Not sure I understand the comment.  I was able to print with the USB port but not the parallel (LPT1). Apparently this is a common problem with Windows 10:

There are many pages of questions, I haven't had a chance to work through the possible solutions, if there are any.

To follow up, I found a temporary fix to the parallel port problem on the other thread, which was to go to  Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / Parallel Port (LPT1), Port Settings tab, and change "Never use an interrupt" to "Try not to use an interrupt" [OK].  However, since the posters there said that it would only work until the next reboot, then I would  have to change the setting again, I opted for a workaround of connecting the printer to my KVM switch USB port.   That works for me because I only use one computer at time, at least for printing.  But this is not a solution for most people with this problem, which seems to be a lot.  Apparently the latest Win 10 update messed up the ability to print to LPT1.
