Can't Format Dvd-RW? (Windows 10)

Hello there, So a good friend of mine gave me a Lenovo T61 computer without a hard drive and dead Battery, I went to Fry's and got a new hard drive for it and now i need a OS. So here comes part of the problem, I had these Dvd-r discs and i couldn't format so i looked it up and i tried every thing they said , I even downloaded a couple of drivers and it never worked. So i thought maybe its the discs,so i went back to Fry's and got a new 10 pack on Dvd-r discs, It still didn't work at all.so i did some more research and found that i needed Dvd-RW so i went BACK to fry's and get Dvd-RW (and also i had to get a big pack because they were out of stock of the small pack) and well It still didn't work. So at this point i don't know what to do so that's why i am here so you guys could help me out, Your help is so much appreciated.

Hi Hayden,

In order for us to properly address your issue with formatting a DVD-R/RW disc, we'd like to ask a few questions.

  • Are you getting any error messages when formatting a DVD-R/RW disc?If yes, what is the exact error message?
  • Have you tried formatting a DVD-R/RW disc to other DVD-R/RW drive?
  • Have you tried inserting other disc like DVD movies or mp3 disc to check if the DVD-R/RW drive is working?

Looking forward to your response.

Hi,

There is no reason to format a DVD with the exception of a DVD-RW that has been previously written on...

The DVD gets "Formatted" as needed in the burning process...

Are you trying to burn something to the disk when this happens, trying to read it, or what ?

Most DVDs are used as a "Write Once" disc and can't be used again...

Windows now has a process that will allow adding files that may require a type of formatting for it to work...

If you right click on a file, select "Send To", then select your CD\DVD drive, you should see something like this...

You want to select the bottom setting for the CD\DVD drive to burn normally...

If you are trying to burn a ISO Image of Windows Installation media, you will need a specific program to do this... I'm pretty sure that none of Windows built in burning features will do this...

They might copy the ISO to the disk, but it would still be a ISO...

Like a ZIP File that was still zipped, just as an example...

You can burn anything to a DVD +\-R that you can burn to a DVD-RW...

The only difference is that the RW can be erased...

Some computers have difficulty booting from a DVD-RW Disc..

Let us know exactly what you are attempting, and we can probably give a better answer...

Hi,

As I've mentioned before... there is absolutely no reason to format a blank DVD disc...

Any formatting that needs to be done happens during the actual burn process..

What program are you using to burn the ISO to the DVD ?

I also didn't understand whether you were trying to burn the DVD with Ubuntu or Windows..

Hi,

I stand corrected about the issue of Windows not being able to burn a ISO...

My machine has a lot of stuff installed, and as a result, some of Microsoft's features were not appearing...

All you should need to do in Win 10 is to right click on the ISO you want to burn and select "Burn Disc Image"...

Windows Disc Image Burner should open for you to select the burner you want to use, then click on "Burn"...

You may not see this option for the same reason I did not... Another program had prevented it from showing in the Right Click menu...

There should be nothing concerning formatting that appears at all...

You might get the menu that I posted before... If so, select the bottom option.
