password protect a folder

hi, I am on windows 10 home, how to password protect or encrypt a folder?
Hi Rudy,

I'm sorry to say that there is no official function for this in Windows 10. You can encrypt a folder, but that will give anyone access to your account to the machine access to the folder, but not anyone else logged into their own account.

If you want to do this, right click the folder, then go into Properties. A new dialog box should open. Click Advanced... on the bottom right, then click on "Encrypt contents to secure data". Now anyone else logged into a different account can't see your folder.

Hope this helps, though I apologize that there is no official function to set a password for a folder.

Hey Rudy. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

What I've always done with no problems is install 7Zip, in File Manager choose the file you want to password, then Add to Archive, it will open a box where you can provide a password and/or zip the file up more if you want. Save that and test opening the new 7zip file to see that password works. If so delete the original.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Here are a list of third utilities that can do that:

http://www.intowindows.com/top-4-free-folder-lo...

If you want to encrypt files and folders natively in Windows 10, you should upgrade to Windows 10 Pro:

Open Start > Settings > Update & security > Activation
Click the link ‘Go to the store to upgrade or enter a product key’
Click the $99 button to make your purchase (the price might vary by region or depending on the edition you are upgrading from or upgrading to).
Follow the on screen instructions to make your purchase.
Within 5 to 10 minutes, your system will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, your personal files, apps and settings preserved.
You won’t get a product key, you get a digital license, which is attached to your Microsoft Account used to make the purchase.

Hi Rudy, Windows does not have that functionality . . .

You need to use a 3rd party utility to do that. There are plenty of free offerings available on the web. A very good free piece of software is Secret Folder:
