Hi apmehta1955, i'm Timon and i'm glad to help you.

Apple’s iPhone and iPad now take photos in the HEIF image format, and these photos have the .HEIC file extension.
Windows doesn’t natively support HEIC files, but there’s a way to view them anyway.

The HEIC codec are free to obtain at Microsoft Store, so you won't need to pay.

I have a very strange problem here in that I can NOT open and see HEIF image format pics from an Iphone on my windows 10 PC, but only one one user within that PC.   The other user can see the photos fine.    I have the HEIF image extension app properly installed on the pc for both users, so that's not the problem.   Any suggestions on what to look for that might explain why only one user cannot see the HEIF images????

the free codec does not work and from other forums neither does the one that has to be paid for! when is MS going to fix this, it's not like Apple have only just started using it.

Yes, it'd be great if the free codec worked. 3/4 the time it doesn't work, and when the image does open up, it's extraordinarily blurry :(

I have spent countless hours on this problem. At first I'd try to import using the photos on window 10, that would always lock up.

Then I'd try to use Explorer to transfer photos from my iPhone to win 10, it would transfer but will not open in windows. It states that photo will not open due to format or update the app. Really? With Windows 7 it was a breeze, now I can't load and organize my pics. It is extremely frustrating and time consuming. I tried downloading the free fix from windows but the link doesn't work.

It's unbelievable how frustrating this is. It shouldn't take a programmer to download pics from your phone.

Yes I've ended up having to upload pictures to online web converters to get around the issue. Doesn't feel like the most secure experience but at least it works. Asides from the numerous web tools, both Google and Apple can work with this format so it's frustrating that Windows can't.

This product does not work. I am using Win 10.0.18363. MS Store says that this is already installed. But I cannot see .HEIC files. What's wrong? How do I fix?
