Encrypting a folder in Windows 10 Home edition

We have Windows 10 home edition and we wish to encrypt a folder on my computer.  We have already found how to encrypt a file, such as MS Word.

I select the folder, right click, and then select “Properties”.  After which I then select, “Advanced...”.  The line, “Encrypt contents to secure data” is greyed out as shown:

Just to check:

Has this to do with BitLocker?  I cannot find it on my computer.

Is BitLocker not installed in Windows 10 Home edition?

Can we download Bitlocker to Windows 10 Home edition?

Do we need to upgrade our Windows 10, and if so, what Edition would we need?

Better still (I hope!), if we can encrypt the folder as it is, what do we do to achieve this?

Many thanks.  Tim.

Hello,

To fulfill the requirements you mentioned so far, you need to upgrade to Pro edition.

Regards.

Hi Tim, Bitlocker is only available on the Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows

If you want to encrypt a folder, there is plenty of free software available on the web that will do that for you, for example - Secret Folder:

DaveM121,

Many thanks for that.  I will certainly look into it.  Have you used it yourself?  If you have, how good is it?
