Can't access files and folders on Windows 10

A lot of AVI video files I recorded on my computer have become unreadable since I updated to Windows 10.  A massive amount of files. They tend to be about 200 - 400 MB in size each. Files which I have recorded since after the update are fine, only those I had on disk at the time of the update appear to have stopped working.

These were files originally recorded with Camstudio, a program which records time lapses of your screen. The files which I had saved on my backup hard drive instead of my local drive remain readable, so it doesn't seem to be a codec issue. Only those that were on my Local disk became "corrupted" this way -  and it appears to be almost all of them. The unreadable files appear to have about the right size, theyre not showing up as being 0bytes or anything but will still not be read.

A few video files are intact, and those are all together in the same few folders. Could it somehow be a folder property that makes them unreadable somehow? The unreadable files also do not show thumbnails in windows explorer, while the readable ones do.

Trying to read it in Windows Media Player says, "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct"

Trying to read the file with VLC says:

File reading failed:

VLC could not open the file "C:\Users\ .......  [the full path of the file is here]"   (Bad file descriptor).

These files represent a significant amount of work, and i would really appreciate help in getting them back! I was very wary of updating to windows 10, and I am mortified at the thought of losing all of this.

Answer

Modify the permissions on the containing folder, clicking the 'Advanced' button on the Security tab.  Set the desired permissions.  Then check the box that says "Replace all child object permissions..."
