Cannot view RAW photo thumbnails in Photos.

I have a Nikon Coolpix B700.  I shoot in RAW format and cannot see my photo thumbnails in File Explorer.  I have downloaded the Nikon NEF codec, but nothing changed.  When I try to open photos in "Photos" the message is, for example,  "DSCN3038.NRW Looks like we don't support this format."  Please help.

Hi KKell. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

See these resources:
https://www.wikihow.com/View-Raw-Files-on-Windows
https://windowsreport.com/open-raw-files-pc/

If no other method works you can try to reinstall Windows Photo Viewer (which is only available if you upgraded from Windows 7, 8, or 8.1) here:
https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-get-windows-...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg, nice to know you're out there.  I went to the

Wiki site and followed the instructions.  Installation instructions told me that the Pack is "not intended for this version of Windows."  I am running Windows 10.   It looks like all of Microsoft's packs are for versions 8 and before.  I'll try the other link.

I did find the other WindowsReport article through my research and downloaded the Nikon "NEFCodec" but it didn't help.  Other suggestions?

I did not upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.   I bought this laptop with Windows 10 on it.

Have you tried the nikon site to see if they have the required addon or driver. Do they have a separate view application?

I have been to the Nikon site.  Their photo viewers are not available for individual sale.  Amazing.

I am surprised that your camera did not come with a CD / DVD with the viewer on it.

This page has a few links to programs that should help with your problem

Hi KK. I just ran the reg file in https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-get-windows-... which does unhide Windows Photo Viewer in Settings > Apps > Default Apps for Photo viewer. What told me it's safe is when I went to copy it the post was edited by my MVP Colleague Shawn Brink who is the master of these tutorials and never lets anything slip by that isn't gold.

I'm not following you.  As I understand that article, it suggests a way to get the old version of Photo Viewer back.  But it cautions that it involves steps that can be risky if you don't know what you are doing.  I am not sophisticated enough to attempt something like that -- and I don't have any assurance that the old version will work any better than the new version.  Am I missing something?

Thank you for that link.  It looks like I will get an app that will require a set of commands to open photos that is entirely separate from Windows File Explorer.  I was hoping I would find a tool that would do for Windows Photo what it can't do for itself.  I can use Adobe Bridge to open NRW files.  Here is my dilemma.  I need to be able to open NRW files in File Explorer because that where my photos are organized and used with Lightroom and that is where Photoshop takes me when I want to open a new file in Photoshop.  I can't determine what photo file I want to work with in Photoshop without being able to SEE the files.  This is so frustrating.  The only easy solution I see here is to stop shooting in RAW format on my Nikon camera.  I have an appointment tomorrow to talk with a live person at Microsoft.  I'm not optimistic, but maybe I'm just discouraged because I have spent 3 hours working on this with no end in sight.  Thanks for your attempts to help.
