Can I MOVE windows 10 apps to another computer?

Hey, I'm Matt Reynolds

I have spent a long time researching this myself but so far I have found no solution, so I'm outsourcing to others.

All I want to do is move my windows 10 app (paid and free) from my laptop to my desktop, as my laptop will soon die on me (RIP).

FYI, don't tell me to redownload them from the store again because unlike most people, I don't exactly have the internet data to do such a task (and some of my apps are quite large in file sizes). Besides, I'm backing up/saving all my file on my laptop before it dies.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt Reynolds

Hello Matt,

To be able to move applications to a new computer, we suggest that you back up your files on the old computer and have it restore to your new computer. To do so, you can follow the steps on how to back up and restore on this link.

Let us know if you have other queries, we will be glad to assist you.

Thanks Karla,
I performed a backup through windows settings on my laptop and then restored the backup on my desktop. All my files and documents restored just fine however none of my windows apps had been backed up.

Do I need to adjust my settings in the backup menu to restore my apps?

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Matthew,

Transferring your applications to other computer is great. However, the feature to do it is not available at the moment. To transfer your applications, you will need to reinstall it again using the installer you saved on your backup. We will consider adding the feature to transfer application to other computer as a good grounds for future updates.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

If you go to store a locate the apps that you own > Store > click on Profile icon > select 'My Library' > click on the app you want to install > it will display as in image2 below:

It will advise you if you own it & invite to install > the proviso is that your 'desktop' will have to have the same store 'login' details as your laptop.

If the app can only be installed on one (1) device, you may have to uninstall from laptop, b4 continuing.

I have included a sample of apps in My Library;

A computer is a device, that requires human input to operate efficiently.
Alas we humans do fail!!!!

Sorry, but I still haven't had any luck.

When I tried looking through my apps in the store and uninstalling the apps I wanted to move from my laptop, the store just wanted to re-download the app again on my desktop.
Part of me just doesn't understand why Windows 10 doesn't have a feature or tool available to move apps.

Thanks for the help still, it's much appreciated.

I have a similar problem, I have an app that I love on my laptop and want to copy it onto my desktop. The app store does not carry the app any longer. The app works great on my win10pro laptop - just want to copy it to my win10pro desktop. Looking for a solution.

Matt as i get your case u are trying to save all your apps before your laptop dies out so u don't need to redownload all of them?

I don't know if it'll work for you but it did for me so u can give it a try go to c\program files\windowsapps note this is a hidden folder also u might need to get the permission to access this by taking its ownership.

You'll find folders by the names of the apps copy all those to a usb flash drive now on your pc go to the store find the apps u had click on download as soon as it begins pause it now go to c\program files\windowsapps on this pc once inside you'll see folders by the app names except for the code part now go inside each folder ,clear everything inside and copy the contents from yout flash drive here then go back to the store and resume the download the apps will automatically start installing.... that's as close as i can get u to copying the apps....hope it works for u as well
