I tried Step 1 prior to posting here.  It doesn't work!

How will users know to press Windows key plus the R key.  That's pretty lame of Microsoft to hide these items.

yes, I also tried the first option, Where do I type on the Start menu? there simply isn't a place to type like win 7 had!

Windows key+"R" worked thank God!!

Okay, found the first option!

It's right where Cortana is, most people would find this confusing though.

this is really bad, MS. There's got to be a better way to find Notepad then hiding it behind the Search.

The notepad icon is located in the folder shown below. Locate the icon, right-click and select send to desktop as a shortcut.

C:\Windows\System32

Good Luck!

Windows 10 is the LAST Windows ANYTHING that I will ever buy - because of this sort of nuttiness all over Windows 10.  Change just for the sake of change!  Bah.  Making us all nuts.  For WHAT reason is Notepad hidden?  Nuttiness, Microsoft!  Pure nuttiness!

I've opened it and saved a blank txt document to my desktop. Then drag that file to your taskbar to have quick access.

That's one way of having it as a shortcut.
