Windows 8.1 boot failed error!!

hi, i got a Lenovo Z510 laptop last month with windows 8.1 pre-installed. one day when i tried booting my laptop i got an error message,"Default boot device missing or boot failed. insert recovery media and hit and key then select 'boot manager' to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media."

but when after few hours i tried booting my device again, i behaved normally as if nothing happened, booted normally.

this boot error problem has occurred at least 6-7 times. i dont know what makes it behave like that sometimes. i would like seek help...what should i do?

P.S.- i also face system slowdown and system hanging/freezing problem sometimes.(i need to force shut it down with power button.)

Hi AmitisPal,

Please answer few questions to narrow down the issue.

1. Is there any external USB devices plugged-in to the system? If yes, try to remove it and observe.

2. What happens when you boot into the BIOS, is the Hard Disk Drive getting detected?

It looks like the operating system might be corrupted or the HDD is not getting detected. Let's analyze and identify the cause of the issue.

Since you are able to boot the computer to normal mode, you may try to scan the hard drive for errors.

Scan the hard drive for errors

a. Move the mouse pointer to bottom left of the screen where you see preview of start menu and right-click to bring up a list of Windows settings.
b. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)’ to bring up elevated command prompt.

Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for permission.
c. In the command prompt, type ‘chkdsk /r’and press Enter.

Answer Y when ‘chkdsk’ asks you if you want to check the drive next time computer boots (restarts).

Note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

Important: Modifying BIOS (Basic input output system)/complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Also check if there are any errors are listed in Event viewer.

Event logs are special files that record significant events on your computer, such as when a user
logs on to the computer or when a program encounters an error.

To open view the logs please follow the steps.

a. Press Windows key + W

b. Type "Event viewer" and open 'View Event logs'.

Check if you find any errors listed in the event logs at the time when the issue occurs.

I would also suggest you to post the query in Lenovo support forums for more information:

Hope this information helps. Reply with the status so that we could help you further.

hello, thanks for your reply

answers to your questions

1. there is no external usb disk or any cd in my optical drive during booting

2. Yes, my hard disk is getting detected in my BIOS settings.

i did scan the hard drive for errors, through command prompt(in the way told by you).

during error checking at next boot up, scan was stuck at 13% for about 40-45 minutes; and after that i saw the login page.(sorry, i was away during the scan after it got stuck at 13% for so long, and thus could not see what was the result after 100% completion of scan. when i returned i saw the hotmail login page.)

Today again the same thing happened, i put my computer to sleep mode...when i woke it up, it came to the login page(with a small beep sound from hardware, not speakers). then the mouse was working fine but i couldn't type password. when i tried restarting it i got the error as i told u last, "default boot device missing...".

you also asked me to go through event view logs at the time of problem, i did but couldn't understand much, so i'm attaching the screen shot of same. the error occurred between 12-2pm this afternoon.

Hi Amit,

Thank you for the event viewer details.

As per the screenshot and the event viewer details the Microsoft-Windows-DNS-Client with event id 1014 is just a warning. It can be ignored. Do you face any issues while accessing the website www.google.co.in ?

If you face any issues accessing the website then follow the steps given below.

  1. Right-click the Network icon located at the bottom-right corner of the Desktop screen then click Open Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Click Change adapter settings present on the left hand side of the screen.

  3. On the Ethernet Properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click Properties.

  4. Click the radio button beside Use the following DNS server address.

  5. Preferred DNS Server 4.2.2.1 and Alternate DNS Server 4.2.2.2.

  6. Click on OK and then save changes.

In the screenshot I can see a Critical error. I request you to provide the Event Viewer Logs in XML view for the Critical Error so that we can assist you with that error.

Hi Amit,

This scenario usually indicates a problem with the hardware. Or, the driver can cause this problem. To help isolate the problem, check the following items:

1. Overclocking
: Disable overclocking to see whether the issue occurs when the system is run at the correct speed.

2. Check the memory: Verify the memory by using a memory checker. Verify that each memory chip is the same speed and that it is configured correctly in the system.

3. Power supply: Make sure that the power supply has enough wattage to appropriately handle the installed devices. If you added memory, installed a newer processor, installed additional drives, or added external devices, such devices can require more energy than the current power supply can provide consistently.

4. Overheating: Check whether the system is overheating by examining the internal temperature of the hardware.

5. Defaults: Use system defaults, and run the system.

If you see that the computer generates a Stop error that contains a BugcheckCode value that is not reported in an event ID 41, change the restart behavior for the computer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Press Windows Key + S Key, type View
Advanced system settings.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.

5. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.
