Answer

Well, am I a happy man, finally KB2919355 is finally installed, after 10 hours effort today and probably 50 hours in total over the last week or so.

OK, what worked for me.

a) I think the repair outlined HERE went some way to correcting corruptions on the component store.

b) I did attempt to apply KB29119355 manually and I think that was the wrong approach.

c) after diagnosing the subsequent 0x802400B message, I applied ANOTHER PATCH (not sure if it was relevant) and re-applied KB29119355 via Windows Update. I then re-booted and after a very long update on both closedown and restart.  After another two reloads KB2919355 was successfully installed.

d) If you are technically inclined I would recommend looking at c:\windows.windowsupdate.log to help diagnose errors.

e) I would strongly suggest that Microsoft holds a post-mortem into the scripting, packaging and release strategy associated with KB2919355.

f) I am reasonably technically literate and this has taken 50 hours to apply an end user patch? - I spent lots of the downtime looking at Apple MACs and Chromebooks - Microsoft go figure.

g) On one of the threads that exceeded 75 pages, I used a bookmark, so I would not have to read through 75 pages to get the next update. However the eventual Microsoft (part) answer was published on page 1 of the 75 page thread, so some people might never see it, if they were using a bookmark.

h) Microsoft needs to be clearer about weather to apply the update manually or via Windows Update. I think Windows Update might be better in that it can schedule updates when other software is un-loaded?
