check this out... hope it can solve your problem

I followed these steps with slight modifications. I will outline these here:

0. Performed a clean boot (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us), making sure that avast was disabled. Avast has a self-defense mechanism, that can prevent you from terminating the service. You need to disable that. Otherwise it will still run even with a clean boot

1. Verified that Windows Update KB2919442 is installed by examining Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history
2. Downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355, published 4/16/2014) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335), including all six files:
     Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu
     Windows8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu
     Windows8.1-KB2934018-x64.msu
     Windows8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu
     Windows8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu
     Windows8.1-KB2959977-x64.msu
3. Tried to create an empty System Tools folder to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, but was unable to. After creating it, it immediately disappears. Didn't bother to investigate further.
4. Ran the following command with administrative privileges:
     dism /online /remove-package/packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
5. Rebooted my PC

6) Ran the following two commands with administrative privileges:
    dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
For the first time in about 20 tries, the restorehealth portion tells me that corruptions are

    fixed!
7) Ran the Microsoft Fixit tool for Windows Update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058). It found some issues that it fixed as well
8) rebooted again
9) Manually installed KB2919355 with success (starting the process from a command line as an administrator) and rebooted when prompted.

10) I attempted to run the other updates in the same fashion, rebooting when asked to do so.
     KB2932046 succeeded
     KB2959977 succeeded as well
KB2937592 no luck with this one. I get the error that the path could not be found. So instead of manually trying to update, I decided to use Windows update. It reported that there are 3 more updates to be installed and prompted for a reboot. That succeeded as well.

Last Step: Turned off clean boot by following the instructions above (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us). Remember to enable Avast's self defense.

Done. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and helped gather solutions from elsewhere.
