Windows 8.1 cursor disappears

Hi. The cursor on my laptop becomes invisible and/or nonfunctional once I type in my password. I've read that this is a problem related to the default configuration, but all the fixes I've found require using the mouse to navigate the Mouse Properties window. If the cursor is not visible and the arrow keys don't work to navigate the properties window, how can this problem be fixed? Thank you.
