Stuck on Black Please Wait Screen

After installing 8.1 on my laptop I find that I am stuck at a black please wait screen in Windows after logging in. See image below
The cancel button you see can not be clicked by either the touch screen or the mouse. I can run programs but they are all hidden by this screen. So my only option is to choose WIN+R and type shutdown /r /o so I can get into boot up options. From there I've tried restore, refresh, recovory. All the options give an error winload.efi being missing or corrupt, error code 0xc0000001
The one option that does work is going into start up options and choosing safe mode. I can get into windows this way and attempted to choose a restore point, but that does not solve the problem.

I am working on getting full recovery media, but in the mean time any other options that might work?

The boot loader is corrupt:

Use a Windows 8 recovery disk and tried the following commands in the Command Prompt option:

  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /fixboot
  • bootrec /rebuildBCD

I was getting the please wait... screen and couldn't stop its evil. When I turned off the power it returned to please wait...
Finally, I removed the battery and turned it on again. This enabled a fresh start and the evil was gone.
