How to change the Microsoft account e-mail address - Windows 8.1

Can anyone help. On the log in screen in Windows 8.1 where i type in my pass code, below my name it shows my email address but this is my old one. Does anyone have any ideas where i go to change this to my updated email address

Are you able to login to in Windows with Administrator account?

If you need to change the email address associated with the user account, then you should have administrator account then you have to switch the login account to “Local user account”. Then switch back to Microsoft account and provide the desired Email ID to that user account.

To do so, please follow these steps given below:

Step 1: Switch to local user account:

Follow these steps to create a “Local User account”.

a. Press “Windows key +W” key.


b. Type “users” without quotes in the search box.

c. Then select “Users” from the left panel.

d. You will get an option “Switch to a Local account” right below your user account name.

e. Select “Switch to a local account” option.

f. Enter the required details.

g. Then login to the local account and check how it works.

Step 2: Switch back to Microsoft account

Follow these steps to create a “Microsoft account”.

a. Press “Windows key +W” key.

b. Type “users” without quotes in the search box.

c. Then select “Users” from the left panel.

d. Select “Switch to Microsoft account” right below your user account name.

e. Enter the required details (Primary Email ID).

f. Restart the computer and then try to login using new Primary account.

Amit K Verma, there is no “Switch to a Local account” in the user search and every time i click on any of the options in the search after typing in users i get this,

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.

Not sure what to do next??

  • Go to PC settings(Press Win+W, Type PC Setting, Click on PC setting)
  • Choose Account option, Then select your account.
  • Click on disconnect below your e-mail address.
  • Now it will be changed to local account.

Now you will be disconnected from your old e-mail.
