Windows 8.1 Stuck on Restart Screen

Original Title: My laptop was stucked in Restarting Screen and it doesn't go away

I just bought my new laptop and (Toshiba Satellite NB10 - A) and Windows 8.1 was already installed in the laptop itself. I installed some applications (like SPSS ver. 20) that are needed in school. And then I went to startup screen and clicked the "Update and Restart" button. After that the "restarting screen" appeared and it just keeps on appearing/loading. It looks like the picture below. Even if I turn off the power and then turned it on, it's still the same. The "restarting screen" is still there. What should I do? Please help me. :(((

Hi Ajaguilar,

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As I understand you have a new laptop and it has windows 8.1 pre-installed. After installing SPSS ver. 20, you restarted windows with Update and Restart option and then windows hangs at the restart screen. You tried hard reset still you were unable to restart or load windows normally.

Drivers, conflicts with other programs, malware, and memory can all cause startup problems. Normally, if you are unable to boot the Windows 8.1 to its Start Screen, the Automatic Repair will check for the errors which is preventing Windows from booting up and will fix it. If this does not happen, then when you may need to run the Automatic Repair by booting the computer to Windows 8.1 installation/recovery disc and then it will fix the issue if the issue with any startup files required for Windows 8.1 to boot up.

You can try automatic repair, if you do not have installation media you can create one using the below help link.

Note: you may need Windows 8.1 product key.

After creating the disc, boot the computer from the disc and then try the following method to perform an Automatic Repair.

  1. Contact the computer manufacturer to know on how to change the boot order of the computer. You will have to change the boot device to CD/DVD drive and then boot from the Windows 8.1 installation disk.
  2. In  the “Windows Setup” dialog box that appears, set the Time and currency format, Keyboard or input method and the language to install      and then click “Next”.
  3. Click  on “Repair your computer” from the lower left corner.
  4. From the “Choose an option screen”, click on “Troubleshoot”.
  5. Click  “Advanced Options” in the “Troubleshoot”  screen.
  6. In  the “Advanced Options” screen, click “Automatic Repair”.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Automatic Repair.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If you still have the same issue, do get back to us.
