Windows 8.1 hangs waking from sleep

I have Windows 8.1 installed on my laptop. Whenever the laptop is on standby for more than 20 minutes, when I try to wake it up, it hangs and the monitor only displays a black screen. I have to hard reset the laptop every time to make it work. This problem only happens when it's on standby for a long time. What is the issue?

I still don't have a fix for this issue. I know it has something to do with the GA rollup MS released back in October. Windows 8.1 RTM was working perfectly before.

Hi,

I would suggest you to download the display drivers to the latest by visiting computer Manufacturer and check the results.

You may uninstall the current driver and try to install in Windows 8 compatibility mode and check the results.

Step 1: Uninstall the display drivers.

Follow the steps provided.

a. Press Windows + X, Click DeviceManager.

d. Right click on the Display Adapter’s name and clickUninstall.

Step 2: Reinstall driver

Download the driver from the above article.

a. Locate the executable file (.exe file) for the driver installation program.

b. Right-click the file, and then click Properties.

c. In the Package Name Properties dialog box, click the Compatibility tab.

d. Click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box, click Windows 8 with which it is compatible with in the Run this program in compatibility mode for list, and then clickOK.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook T731, and I have the same problem, except it freezes every time I wake it up from sleep, no matter how long its been asleep, and it either freezes on the lockscreen (can't get the screen to swipe up - have tried touch, mouse, keyboard) or responds for enough time to swipe up the screen 3/4 of the way and then freezes. In rare cases I have got all the way to halfway through typing my password and then it has frozen. Hard restart is the only way to resolve this - I have tried waiting.

I have also attempted to follow the steps mentioned above. I ran the power troubleshooter, but when I tried to use allow this device to wake the computer, I could not find the power management section in my keyboard properties or mouse properties. I have also tried looking for drivers, but there are no display or keyboard drivers available on Fujitsu's website, although I have updated my mouse drivers.

My school has an IT department and they have spent the last week trying to resolve this issue, however after messing with some people's hardware they have come to the conclusion that the Windows 8.1 software is at fault.

Are there any other solutions?

Hi Seb,

I would recommend you to updates the BIOS(Basic Input Output Device) and see if it helps. You need to contact the computer manufacturer to do the same.

Warning: Be careful when changing BIOS settings. The BIOS interface is designed for advanced users, and it's possible to change a setting that could prevent your computer from starting correctly. Updating BIOS should only be done if necessary (to solve a compatibility problem, for example). It can be a complicated process, and if an error occurs, your computer could be rendered inoperable. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly.
