Holding Down Keyboard Keys Doesn't Repeat

Hello.

Last night after updating, I found out that when I hold down any key on my keyboard, it does not continue to repeat whatever I typed. IE, I hold down 'x' but only get 'x' instead of 'xxxxxxxxx'. I cannot use the arrow keys to scroll efficiently (since I have to press them over and over again) and backspace gets rid of one character for each press (which got annoying after one word.) I noticed the problem first while scrolling using the down arrow key, which wasn't really scrolling, just nudging.

I have looked through Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, Repeat Keys, etc. I have Filter Keys, Sticky Keys, and Toggle Keys off. I have Repeat Keys set up to accept repeated keystrokes at the minimum delayed rate, but it doesn't seem to actually do anything for me anywhere outside of the test box in Control Panel. Within the box I can hold down a letter key to get it to type the same letter repeatedly, although the arrow keys and backspace key don't repeat their actions.

Please help!!! And thank you in advance!!!

(Also I'm sorry if this isn't the right topic, I wasn't sure which one to pick.)

Try toggling Filter keys.  FWIW that option makes my keyboard completely non-functional.  I just get weak beeps from any keystroke.  YMMV.  Apparently a way to get there is to press and hold the right-Shift- key for at least 8 seconds.

Well, I turned on Filter Keys, which makes my problem go away, although it's not back to normal at all. Thanks for at least solving part of it!

            turned on Filter Keys

Now toggle it off.  Sometimes toggling a switch on and off acts as a kind of repair of its functionality.

Unfortunately, that puts me right back where I started, with the original problem. :(

There is also a Speed tab in Keyboard Properties (Win-x P K Enter).  See what its state is and if changing anything there changes your symptom.  Note that if you want to test the Arrow keys or Backspace you must have first typed something into the test area.

Good luck

I've got them set at the fastest setting for me, since "Slow Keys" sets up a delay on each press, but turning off Slow Keys makes any chance of curing the symptoms disappear. I guess I'll just have to live with the problem.

Thanks for all the help.

I was also struggling with the no repeat on the keys but after doing what you suggested and holding the right shift key down for about 10 seconds there was a small beep and now every key will repeat just by holding it down as it should. Thank once again.

Holding down the Left Shift Key does nothing for my KB. I am trying to turn on repeat key so I'll be able to go back with the BackSpace key too and of course the usual repeating on any other key. Am on W10 and for some reason if I create another user profile it works fine and when I check those KB settings they are identical to my other profile so I'm stumped. Did find a registry setting on another forum that supposedly sets the repeat rate at a slightly slower speed for W10.

see this link for W10

One of the posts mentioned holding down the RIGHT shift key (not the LEFT) and that worked for me. I'm not sure what caused the problem or what holding down the RIGHT shift key did, but now the problem is fixedddddddddddddddddddddd. :-)

Hello,

I was having same problem, googled the problem and found a thread similar to my problem here.

I tried all tips and tricks mentioned here, but failed to repair.

Here is the solution:

"" Press Shift key for 10 second""

Done.

Thanks
