Windows phone 8 device not detected on Windows 8.1 laptop anymore

Till last week, my home laptop (Win 8.1 x64) is able to detect whenever I connect my Lumia 920 and was able to deploy/debug my WP apps. All of sudden it stopped detecting, not showing the Device in the My Computer any more but my phone is keep charging if I plugged into USB.

After couple of searches, I landed on this KB article - did reinstalled the USB drivers, all recommended solutions in that article but no luck.

I looked in the Device manager, I can see one of the USB device has this yellow exclamation mark and tried updating/reinstalling the drivers - no luck, it says I have latest driver all the time.

In the System events, I can see critical errors as soon as I plug my device into laptop for above MTP device.

Hi Mahender,

This issue might occur due to corrupt driver for the device or the driver is not able to get installed when you connect the device.

1) Is this issue specific to Windows Phone 8?

2) Did you try connecting the phone to a different port or a different computer running Windows 8.1?

If you have not tried connecting the device to a different port, try doing so and check if the issue still occurs. Also, to verify if it’s an issue with the phone, try connecting it to a different computer running Windows 8.1 and check for the results.

To troubleshoot the issue, you can follow the methods:

Method 1:

Uninstall the device driver and let Windows install the driver for you. This is how you can do so:

a) Connect the phone to the computer.

b) Press Windows+X key and select Device Manager.

c) Right Click on the device driver that has exclamation mark and select Uninstall.

c) Click on Scan for hardware changes from the menu options at the top of the window for Device Manager.

Check if that fixes the issue.

If not, then, let’s move to the next method.

Method 2:

Restore the computer to a point prior to this issue. Refer to the link to do so:

Refer to the link below:

Refer to the section “Restore your PC to an earlier point in the time”:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

Also, refer to the link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/what-device-isnt-installed-properly

For further reference, you can also refer to the manufacturer website to check for latest updates related to chipset driver. That might fix the issue.

Please let us know about the results.

Hi,

I tried connecting to different USB ports with no luck - same behavior. I was able to connect the iPhone 4s successfully and able to access the contents as mass storage.

Regarding the restore, I did reinstalled the whole OS - but no luck.

I can able to repro same behavior in multiple laptops.

Regards,

Mahender

Hi.

I have the same problem, and as far as I know it is specific to Windows 8.1
I've updated recently from Windows 8 to 8.1, and suddenly my phone is not detected by the system on any port. I have no problems with connecting it to my laptop (running Windows 8), but 8.1 cannot detect any of the following phones: Nokia Lumia 820, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, HTC 8S on any ports.

This is not a WP8 specific problem. I also encounter the same issue while connecting my LG Nexus 4 to my Vaio laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro N. Earlier I had a Windows 8 Pro, and my Nexus would connect just fine in all modes I need it in (MTP. Camera mode, ADB etc). Now after installing 8.1, it is not even connecting in a single mode. There is a yellow exclamation on the Nexus 4 icon under the device manager where it is classified as "other devices". If I install ADB drivers, it is shown as Google ADB but again I can not connect as an MTP/Camera device.

I have tried connecting Lumia 520, Lumia 720 as well. Same issue.

I have the same problem with a Nokia Lumia 720.

I tried to connect a Nokia Lumia 720 updated with black update, but it isn't seen by my PC. The same behaviour occurs with a notebook.

Both the PCs were updated from Window 7 to Windows 8 and then to Windows 8.1 .

Any help to resolve these problems ?

Thanks in advance.
