I too am in the same position with an even more stupid result from updating to Win8.1 (obviously the .1 refers to what hardware will remain working in your machine after the update).
My wireless optical mouse and keyboard still work with one slight omission..the mouse wheel will not operate in win8.1 nor will any of the programmable buttons...I think MS has finally weaned me off their products after 28yrs [of putting up with their incompetence].
What should make you really laugh is that it is a MS keyboard and mouse...

Hi Cosmin,
This might happen if the INF file is corrupt. I would suggest you to reinstall the wireless keyboard and mouse.
Here is the link to download the latest drivers.

Very disappointed in the reply you give here as it shows how little you actually know about windows. Mouse "drivers" have not been necessary since win 3.1 as they have been a standard part of the operating system since then. Unless some innovative numpty decided it would be clever to remove standardisation for input devices in the 8.1Crapdate, there can be no possibility of a corrupted .inf file, especially when the hardware doesn't work on different machines.
What should really be impressing you though is that my logitech, trust and cherry mice and keyboards all work fine==>only the Microsoft mouse and keyboard are misbehaving.
Oh and before you refer us to the MS Mouse and Keyboard centre, that bloatware doesn't make any difference. It just says everything is working fine at the same time as not recognising the buttons of the product it has identified as plugged in.

Same is happening with me...I was running 8.1 for some time with no issues...now all of a sudden issues: no keyboard or mouse (Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 700 v2.0). I tried another set (I have two of these wireless keyboard/mouse sets) and same
thing...plug the receiver into my laptop running 8.1 and it picks up....weird....yes when I switched out the set, I switched out the receiver. The receiver shows up under device manager now as unknown device...when I try to update the driver I get:
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.....An error occurred during the installation of the device. The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because
the INF was written for Windows 95 or later.
Please don't tell me to reinstall the driver as this (and most) Microsoft keyboard/mice don't come with drivers...part of the OS now.

Hi Cosmin,
From what the error message states it appears that the INF file of the driver is incorrect. The INF file which contains the information is necessary for Windows to identify and use the device. In this case, since Windows reports a problem with the INF file, I would suggest you to uninstall the driver for the device and then reinstall it and check. Refer to these steps:
a) Make sure that devices and the receiver are connected to the computer.
b) Press Windows key + X, select Device manager.
c) Locate the receiver, keyboard and mice.
d) Right click on each device and select “Properties”.
e) Click on the driver tab to check the current driver installed for that device.
f) Click on the uninstall button to uninstall that driver.
g) Now restart the computer. Windows will load the device with the built in Windows drivers.
h) If the issue persists, you can click on the ‘update’ button on the driver tab of each device so that windows can search online for the most compatible driver for the device and install it.
Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
Ben.
