Graphical glitches after installing Windows 8.1

After I have installed Windows 8.1 on my Asus Vivotab Smart (ME400C), I frequently encounter graphical glitches, such as flickering triangles, incomplete UI-s and so on. The settings app and freshpaint are severily affected, but others show the problem too. If I switch applications the glitches tend to disappear, though this not help with fresh paint as the glitchy drawing are already on the canvas. I updated the graphics drivers, but it did not help.

Before the update everything worked flawlessly.

Hi,

There are no Windows 8.1 drivers for your computer model, in the manufacturer website. I would suggest you to install latest display drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS%20VivoTab%20Smart&os=35

To install the display driver in compatibility mode, I would suggest you to follow these steps.

a. Download the latest network adapter driver for Windows 8 from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

b. Right click on the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.

c. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

d. Place a check mark next to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select Windows 8 from the drop down list.

e. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with updated status of the issue to assist you further.

First things first, there is a video from the glitch: http://sdrv.ms/1ezUUkc

I first tried to update the graphics drivers through the Device Manger with the search drivers on the internet option. It has found a newer driver and started installing it, but suddenly the screen have gone black and the device rebooted after a half minute. I tried it once more with the same results.

Then Asus LiveUpdate application popped up, it installed some drivers (it hasn't specified which ones), and rebooted the computer. Which went fine, but the glitches persisted. Then I saw a Windows Update called "Intel(R) Corporation driver update for Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelator - Windows 8.1", I installed it. It also caused the screen to go black, but after a couple seconds the update finished successfully.

On side note I have seen a dramatic improvement in framerates after the 8.1 update in games and in freshpaint (which were barely usable before). Now the speed is right, but time-to-time I run into flickering triangles on the Modern UI, which I have not seen on any UI a long ago. Fortunately app swicthing or random tapping usually solves the problem, but I hope this will be fixed. I also understand that this might be Intel's fault too, they have never been the best in graphics drivers.

Also in freshpaint drawing causes random white lines and triangles to popup all the time, if I use undo, then most of the things I have painted are replaced by random memory garbage, which can be shuffled by the fan (it looks like some sort of modern art by the way, look at it: http://sdrv.ms/1c5jGeE, I have only used blue).

I have found this solution on ASUS VivoTab Smart, but might works for others too (same chipset):

  1. Download this: http://sdrv.ms/H55W5F (I have extracted this from the Asus Vivotab Smart driver package, which somehow forgets to install it)
  2. Disable automatic driver install like here: http://www.microcentertech.com/tech_center/DB/read_article.php?faqid=./HowTos/HOW5006661B.htm
  3. Go to Device Manager, remove the graphics driver, check the delete driver files checkbox (if you were succesfull a Generic Microsoft Display Adapter will appear, and the interface becomes laggy, also I had to repeat this multiple times, as multiple intel drivers were installed)
  4. Install the downloaded driver through the Device Manager
  5. ???
  6. Profit

Crashes and glitches are all gone now.

I've tried this solution many different times following the instructions to the letter and with no positive results. I'm using a vivo tab smart, and when I go to install the downloaded driver from the skydive link it contains nothing that my tablet will recognize. What am I doing wrong?

Yeah, this "fix" didn't work for me, either. It's making it hard to recommend this thing over the iPad.

A firmware update and an Intel driver update dated 20 November 2013 seems to have completely resolved these graphical issues.

I have a similar problem, it looks like this:

I tried to do as you said but I don't understand the third thing. I don't find the graphics driver? And isn't it unsafe to remove it?
