Error code 39 – USB composite Device (keyboard and mouse)

Please help I am at my wits end. My Microsoft wireless key board and mouse (it’s a wireless 800 desktop set) has stopped working when trying to install it I have received this message ‘’windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware, the driver may be corrupted or missing [code 39]’’. I have tried-;

  • Unplugging and restarting my PC

  • Downloading the  driver  and software from Microsoft but am still getting  the error

  • Troubleshooting to fix it to no avail

  • Uninstall and reinstalling driver software, scanning for hardware changes with no success

  • Following the solutions listed in this link  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060

In the hope that one would work but still no resolution

  • Rolling back the driver to the previous version. But I have been unable to do this, as this option is grey out so I cannot click it

Finally I gave up and called Microsoft. This was useless as I was passed from the windows engineer to the Microsoft hardware engineer and was finally cut off with no resolution to my problem. Can anyone offer any solution to this problem? I am on windows 8.1.

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I can understand the inconvenience you have experienced.

If you have not tried uninstall and reinstalling the USB Controller and check if that helps.

a. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
b. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers and right-click on each USB controller.
c. Select Un-install.

Restart the computer. This will re-install the USB drivers. Check if the issue is resolved.

If the issue persists, update the Chipset drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Hope this helps.

Please post back with the status of the issue and we will be glad to assist you further.

Thanks Ashish. I have done what you suggested but the problem still persists. What next? Is there a usb composite device driver that can be downloaded  from the  micrsoft  website  to rectify this problem?

Hi,

Thank you for the update and apologies for late response.

You can uninstall the driver from Device Manager and visit the computer manufacturer's support website to install the latest driver available for the same computer model that you have.

Hope this helps.
