8.1 Driver Update Disables Wireless Connectivity

Yesterday I updated to 8.1. Afterward there was an "optional update" in Windows Update for my Ralink RT 3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter. Ut says it is a Microsoft certified driver. Installed it. Lost all ability to connect to the internet through my router (actually you could connect to the router, but there was not internet connectivity). Rolled back the driver to the previous 6/26/2013 veriosn., Connectivity restored.

Doesn't Microsoft test these drivers before releasing them?

Answer

I think I have a solution for you.

A new driver was just released for Ralink WiFi Cards on Oct 15, 2013 that works with the Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Adapter.

I just recently installed it and it solved the exact same problem you are having.

I got the driver here: http://www.station-drivers.com/download/ralink/ralink_2860_5.0.31.0-w7-8-8.1(www.station-drivers.com).exe

It will run a self extracting tool. All you need to do is extract it to a folder and run "setup". That's it.

My Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn WiFi Adapter ran within seconds of finishing the install (no reboot required)

Hope it works for you!
