"Save as" dialogue box does not show the nevigation pane

Original Title: Save As and Open dialog boxes are not showing folders

When I Save As in any program (Word, Powerpoint, Adobe) the dialog box no longer looks like it used to and I can't see folders or a navigation pane. I've attached a screen shot of an example.

I am using Windows 8.1.

I've tried restoring folder options to default in control panel but nothing has worked. None of the options under Organize or under the change your view icon modify this screen at all.

If I open Windows Explorer, the files and folders are fine, nothing has changed there. It is only the Save As dialog box.

Any help to be able to return the screen back to the regular Save As dialog box would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello Emma,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community Forum.

As per the issue description, I understand that “Save as” dialogue box does not show the left pane to select the save location when you try to save a file from programs as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe etc.  You have already tried a number of troubleshooting steps like restoring folder options to default, changing Organize and View settings but none of them helped you enough to get this issue resolved.

This issue may appear due to accidently modified “Save as” dialogue box layout, incorrect Files and folders view settings, or some important system files corruptions.

Let’s try these methods below and check if that helps.

Method 1:

The “Save as” dialogue box appears the way it is showing up in the screenshot when the Navigation Pane option is unchecked under layout when you click Organize.

If you have not tried already let’s follow the steps below to change the dialogue box layout to show navigation pane.

  1. Click Organize button at the upper left corner on Save as dialogue box.

  2. Select Layout option from the dropdown.

  3. Check the Navigation Pane box.

  4. The left navigation pane should appear now.

Also see: How to work with files and folders.

If the issue persists, proceed with the next method.

Method 2:

Sometimes this kind of unexpected behavior shown by Windows due to some missing or corrupt important system files. I would suggest you to rum Microsoft Safety Scanner SFC /SCANNOW to scan the system integration and fix any corruption.

The sfc /scannow (System File Checker) command scans all protected system files, and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files.

Thanks for the reply.

Option 1 didn't work. Navigation Pane is already checked. Unchecking and checking it again makes no difference to the Save As dialog box.

I did Option 2 and repaired the missing file (CNBJ2530.DPB of prncada.inf) and restarted my computer but I still have the same problem with the Save As dialog box. It still looks the same as my original post.

Any other ideas to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Emma

Looks like the user profile got corrupted. You may refer the section To copy files to the new user profile in the Microsoft article below.

Hi,

thanks for the help. There is no problem in the new user profile.

But this solution hasn't given me any indication how to actually fix the root of the problem or how to prevent it happening again in this new user profile... ?

Cheers,

Emma

Hello Emma,

Thank you for your reply.

Since old user profile got corrupted it may cause other issues as well, keeping all your files into old profile might be risky. The corrupted user profile may become inaccessible any moment and you may lose access to your data. To prevents that I would suggest you to transfer all your stuffs from your old corrupted user profile to the new one.

The above article guides you to easily transfer your data from the old user profile to the new. Follow the steps in the article above.

Please do let me know if you do not understand any step in the article or if you need any assistance in doing that. We are here to help you.

Hi Mann,

I had already made the new user profile and transferred my files.

What I am saying is, that I still have no idea how my user profile got corrupted and therefore how to prevent that happening again...

i.e. as I have no idea how my Save As dialog box stopped working, I have no idea how to make sure it doesn't happen again in the new user profile that I have now had to start using.

Thanks for your help

Hello Emma,

Great to hear that you were able to transfer all your files from corrupted user profile to the new one.

User profile generally gets corrupted due to virus/malware attacks or when some important system files gets removed accidently while installing/uninstalling a number of programs on your computer or using any third party registry or system cleaner tool.

To avoid that in future I would suggest you to keep your computer clean, do not install unnecessary programs from unrecognized sources, download and install programs which you really need and download only from recognized source.

Windows 8 comes with preinstalled security software, make sure that Windows defender is turned on and scans your computer periodically. Also make sure that all your important Windows updates are installed successfully.
