Failed to create D3D device

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and all my games stopped working. Most of the games fail with Failed to create D3D device. I also updated my GPU drivers to Nvidia 352.84, but the errors still persist.

Hi Pankaj,

Thank you for being part of Windows 10.

Direct 3D is responsible for handling the instructions that are necessary for rendering 3-D graphics in software using DirectX technology. Direct 3D is a subset of Microsoft DirectX and is the element that computes the information contained in code such as shader files. DirectX is the front-end and has the ability to read and understand the same language that the Direct 3D API can. When code such as that inside a shader file is called upon, DirectX detects that it is Direct 3D-related and passes the job to it. When a Direct 3D render error occurs, DirectX is telling you that it was unable to relay the information to the Direct 3D API or the Direct 3D API was failed to compute the data.

I suggest you to run the game as an administrator and check.

a.  Right-click the shortcut you use to launch the game and click "Properties."

b. Click the "Compatibility" tab.

c. Click in the box next to "Run This Program as an Administrator" and then click the "Apply" button. Launch the game.

Do get back to us for any issues pertaining to Windows in the future. We will be happy to help.

I tried to run the program as an administrator but it still gives the same error. Only one game opens correctly, NFS Rivals, but I cant get past the front screen as the program asks to press enter but doesn't do anything after it. Rest of the games fail before showing any kind of window.

I got the games working by updating the Micorsoft Display Manager. When I did that, it was automatically replaced by an Intel Driver and since then my games started working on Nvidia card as well.

I've got the same problem. I've got my Dota2 running but with 1fps (seriously its 1 all throughout). How do you 'update' microsoft display manager/adapter?

I can't install updates because the Nvidia on the windows update is breaking my pc.

Open Device Manger (type in search or open from Control Panel). Click on the Display adapters. Here you will see all the display drivers installed. Click on the driver to update, this opens driver properties. You will find the driver update button under the Driver tab. Now the correct driver for your pc will automatically be downloaded and installed.

Device Manager is showing my Graphics Card (Nvidia 820M) and Microsoft Adapter (which should be Intel HD)

Fortunately, Windows Update managed to just install the just the video driver (not the Nvidia one but the Intel one) and a security patch (dunno how and why, but it happened).  When it finished installing video drivers I don't even need to do a restart it immediately showed on device manager and all of my apps now work great!

In my device manager I attempted to update but every time I press the search for updates online button it says this already had the best software installed. What's more, every time I start up my PC I get the same error message from AMD stating that I don't have up to date drivers. My drivers are fully up to date so it would appear that Windows 10 has screwed over gamers with AMD graphics. Any ideas about how I could fix this?

That didn't work for me either. For AMD I think you should download from the website itself and install that update manually. Also, you should try checking in dxdiag (Windows button + r then type 'dxdiag' without the quotations). If you have Display and Render tab. Check your Display Tab if it's really your default graphics card (Mine's Intel but it shows Microsoft adapter so I installed an update to in Windows Update and it did the trick.

Disclaimer: I have nvidia graphics so I'm not certain about AMD.

PS: You can't manually update Intel they don't show the update in their website don't know why.

so is there no fix to this, windows 10, i5 4440k 960gtx msi failed to create d3d device... drivers are all up to date, "verified the integrity of the game cache" through the steam app. made sure native resolutions were set at the right setting, restarted, shut down, unplugged/replugged hardware... cant play counterstrike
