How to access or pin recently used files in windows 8

For most versions of Windows (especially XP-7) you can access recently used files/documents from the start menu. In windows 7, you had jump lists for programs.

Is it possible to access either of these features in windows 8? Pin them to the start menu? etc.?

You can do this by creating a shortcut to the document and then putting the application name before the file string in  the target.  For example: C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe "c:\Docs\My Text Doc.txt" (when I tested this I just put notepad.exe and Windows did the rest).

Then, when you right click on the amended shortcut you get a 'Pin to start' option.

This is a bit fiddly, and I only made the connection as it allowed me to pin shortcuts that had an application as the target.  What would be useful is to be able to pin documents to the start screen without having to do this fiddly shortcut/techy process.
