Start Screen does not seem suitable for the conventional PC

original title: No Start Menu, No Windows.

I've now used Windows 8 CP extensively, all on conventional desktop and laptop computers.

Sorry but that metro interface just plain sucks when on that kind of platform.  I can see it making sense for tablets and smartphones, but on conventional PC's it is so unsuited that is simply unusable.  Tried getting used to it, didn't happen, only got worse.

And trying to force people to metro by eliminating the start menu is just plain insane.  Can you spell V-I-S-T-A  D-E-B-A-C-L-E!!   Well you're heading for that train wreck all over again - did you people not learn anything??  Do you not want people that use conventional laptops or desktops any more?

So I'll keep this post short and sweet:  No Start Menu, then NO WINDOWS 8 for me.  I'll simply use something else.   Judging from all the other posts on this topic I'm not alone.  Continue on your present path at your own peril Microsoft.  You've been warned.  ( Déjà Vu, Vista redux ).

I agree wholeheartedly, but Microsoft is not listening.

Why don't you like the start menu?  Maybe you should explain your issues?

Because Metro is for the most part useless on a desktop. There is nothing the Start Screen offers that can't be done on the Desktop without all the extra garbage.

I could swear that he said that he WANTED the Start Menu.

start screen=start menu?

Anyways, there is very little that the new start screen can not do that the old start menu can.

Maybe it's been so long since you've run something besides Win 8 that you've forgotten that the Start Menu is what you used to get when you clicked on the Start Icon in the lower left corner.

A Window that popped up on the left side of the screen

After which you would see a list of recently used programs on the left, a Search Bar on the bottom, an All Programs button on the bottom, and a list of links to Personal Files and Tools on the right.

I don't recall anything on the new START SCREEN that even remotely comes close to providing that capability in such a small space.

I'm not sure how some one could get  them confused.

The issue is not whether in a round about way you can eventually find what you could find in Start Menu on the Start Screen. The issue is all the extra steps involved in doing such a simple task.

I have a Desktop, and have absolutely no use for TOUCH SCREEN features on a pretty little kiddies toy.

So the start screen takes up a little more space?  that means that there can be more icons displayed at once.  if you need it smaller, use start8 or something like that.

The Start Screen takes up A LOT MORE space.

Have you ever actually tried selecting All Apps?

I have HUNDREDS of HELP FILES that show up....of all various languages...all of which were previously contained in ONE FOLDER per program which could be completely ignored.

Now they are intermixed with the shortcuts, exe's, uninstallers, the works.

It is extremely difficult to find the actual file you are looking for, and I'm not interested in typing it into search...especially when I may not know the correct name of the file.

If some one wants to use Metro and the Start Screen because it suits their purpose...that's fine by me.

But don't even think about shoving it down my throat with the final release.

I will not only not buy Win 8, I WON"T BUY ANYTHING with Win 8 installed on it....period

Extremely well stated by slance310.

The Metro based start screen is beyond useless on a conventional pc.  Offers not a shred of added value over the start MENU of previous Windows versions, and in fact REMOVES several features of the old start menu that were useful.

Many people with desktop PC's that have ordinary mouse & KB will have no use for the Metro start screen.  Saying it can be made to work if you just take a crapload of extra steps IS the point.  That falls smack dab into the old "lipstick on a pig" analogy.  Sure, with enough lipstick smeared over Metro Start it can me made to work [poorly].  But it's still a big ole ugly pig that is far worse than what it replaced.
