Error "Unable to connect to the internet. If you use a firewall, please whitelist GoogleUpdate.exe"

Original title: It's there but it's not there (Windows 10)

Everything was fine up until now, I was scanning my laptop using the windows defender and suddenly there's a window telling me to restart my laptop to complete the scan so I restarted it. After restarting it my skype won't work anymore neither my google chrome, it says something about whitelist firewall (it couldn't connect to internet) but I can't find any.

It says "Unable to connect to the internet. If you use a firewall, please whitelist GoogleUpdate.exe" everytime I tried to install my google chrome (it somewhat uninstalled (not in the uninstall window) but still there after windows defender told me to restart my laptop).

Hi,

I would suggest you to go through the methods below and check.

Method 1: Turn Off the firewall.

Refer to the Turn Windows Firewall on or off in the same Microsoft help article.

Steps applies to Windows 10.

Note: Firewall can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable the firewall. If you have to temporarily turn it off, you should turn it on as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your firewall if off, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

If the issue still persists, follow method 2.

Method 2: Perform SFC scan

I would suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if that helps. The sfc/scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. It is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Refer the link:  Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Windows 8.1 steps applies to Windows 10.

Please reply us with these information and the current status of your computer we will be happy to assist you further.

Well, my friends said that this was caused by a virus which cannot be found or cleaned by windows defender, since I can't fix this problem I did a factory reset and it works, just need to download windows 10 again. If you still can't fix this problem I suggest you to also do a factory reset, a recovery won't do, but remember to backup your data first maybe to Data (D:)
