Windows Fax and Scan

Scanning documents and does not display correct file types. Only can save as photo type file

Hi Kay,

Most users these days prefer scanning than faxing because of the convenience and quality. Scanning usually converts document into an image that is why the only option for is it to save the file as jpeg or pdf. Did you read question? I cannot save as a pdf as there is no choice for this or any other document type.

This issue may occur if you have an outdated driver. If your device doesn't have an option to directly save scanned document as PDF file, you can use a file converter to convert the document from JPG to PDF.

You can also check out community member cleiby's reply on this thread, dated February 4, 2016, that is about turning the scanned document from JPG to PDF.

Scanner is able to save as a pdf file. Driver is current. Windows Scan is not showing me document choices when tell to scan as a document. Only shows photo file endings.

This issue may occur due to capability issues of your scanner. We suggest that you contact your device's Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for us to check if they have programs that will suit your scanner for you to be able to save your file to what type you desire.

Scanner has been able to save document files previously. Nothing has changed except for documents now defaulting to photo file extensions. saving scan as a document.

So far as I know, Windows Fax and Scan has never been able to produce anything but image files.  The current choices are BMP, JPG, TIFF and PNG:

Use the software that came with your scanner.  WF&S is an antiquated PITA.

See drop down arrow to right of profile. Select document as type. File types should change to pdf and docx. Might be more but cannot see choices now.

To have all of the needed features you may need to install the full software package for the scanner, from it's Support Downloads webpage.

For example, to scan an editable document may require IRIS character recognition software included with the scanner software.
