Windows 10 and Photoshop

Hello Community,

I recently upgraded from Win7 to Win10 with a clean/fresh install on a new SSD.

Win10 works just fine and everything is running smooth according to all performance indicators.

However - after I re-installed my Adobe package I noticed that Photoshop slowed down in every aspect, not when opening (only app. 1-2 seconds),  but in processing/editing tasks – when compared to same images/file sizes in Win7 - before the upgrade.

All settings in PS Preferences are the same.

Does anyone have an idea what’s going on?

I must suspect Win10 since nothing changed in PS.

Info

Win10 Pro, 64 bit, Build 1709 on Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB

SSD just for OS - all data are on the HDD drive. (as it was before)

i7, Nvidia 460, 16 GB Ram

PS: With the previous SSD (OCZ from 2012) I did the (at the time) often recommended tweaks:

-Indexing off, -hibernation off, but Superfetch on (as Win7 wanted it on), –left small pagefile on,

Now - in Win10 I left everything to Windows as many say Win10 knows best in adjusting to / recognizing an

SSD…?

Any suggestions reg. the slower pewrformance, please…

Thanks

Hello Klaus,

The performance issue you're experiencing with using Adobe programs might be caused by a software conflict. It would be nice if you can provide more details about your concern. Kindly answer the following questions:

  • Is the issue isolated to Adobe programs?
  • Are you getting any error messages?
  • Have you tried installing the latest updates for the Adobe programs?
  • What is the current OS Build of your Windows 10 Version 1709 PC? Click the Start button, type About your PC, press Enter, and then scroll down to Windows specifications to find this information.

For now, I suggest performing the steps found in this support article. The link has tips on how to improve the performance of Windows 10 system.

We'll be waiting for your response.

Thanks for the reply

to your questions:

- It's only with Photoshop and I guess because its a more heavy, resource using app.

All other programs so far are normally fast.

The slowness in PS to process images actually only appears when the file is large.

         Smaller files go faster.

 - I also noticed that it takes PS and Bridge longer (3-4 sec) to start up. But only the first time.

After that, when closed and stgarted up again, only 1/2 sec.

- No error messages

- All up to date, very lean system, minimal startup items, Windows Defender with Malwarebytes

- Win10 Pro, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.309

- No warnings, everything I can check reg. performance says: good - no event errors except

   10016 (not cruical ..?)

   - Memory:  in use: 2.3 / 14% idle  -  start PS + Bridge 2.9 / 19%

     - paging file is set to "Windows-automatic" / 12432 MB / only on "C" (SSD 252 GB / 202 GB free)

Hope this helps to pin point

Thanks

Thank you for that information. For further isolation of the performance issue, I suggest running Adobe Photoshop in clean boot state and see if the issue continues. A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you run a program in Windows 10. For the steps on how to perform a clean boot in Windows, please refer to this support article. You can also check our YouTube video

for a detailed guide.

NOTE: Please go to the section: Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting to boot the PC in normal startup after fixing the issue.

We'll be waiting for the results.

Hi Devlin,

thanks for your time.

For some reason everything works ok now.

I did NOT do the clean boot however.

I think its pretty much back to normal, considering that the Nvidia GTX 460 is a bit antiquated.

PS efficiency indicator always shows 100% though.

Complicated/resource intensive tasks (as in a complicated sharpening action, etc. take a second to process on images over 100 MB - that's ok.

Thanks again
