Turn Off Xbox Game Monitoring

I have Xbox disabled, but this service cannot be disabled and runs during Steam games. It causes PC performance issues and has caused my games to lock up.

How do I keep this service from running?

  3. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup, and then click OK.
  4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

If you are still experiencing the same issue, click this link and follow the steps to perform the solutions in resolving your issue.

We will appreciate if you can update us the results so if these solutions won't work, we will find another way to resolve your concern.

I want the Game Monitoring Service shut down completely. I don't use an Xbox or the Xbox app. I don't want it monitoring games I purchased through a different service.

How do I shut it down?

Dear Loraine Mon,

Please read GalanaarWantsRealAnswer's actual question.

Your generic copy and paste reply is not helpful and you clearly haven't actually read or understood the question, nor even the title of the thread.

Please endeavour to give better service in the future.

Hi GalanaarWantsRealAnswer,

This is not a fix, however;

Open "RUN" (windows + R key) and type in Services.msc and hit enter.

Find Xbox Game Monitoring, see the column Status to determine if it is running.

If it is running, I suggest opening command prompt (search cmd in start menu, right click and Run as Administrator).

and try typing in the following:

net stop xbgm

Hi, use Regedit to disable xbgm

Search this line

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\xbgm

Change Start  REG_DWORD----> (right slick mouse to Start---->change 3 to 4)----> 0x00000003 (3) to 0x00000004 (4)

Open services and check Xbox Game Monitoring, it will be disabled.

Done :)

Okay. First, thanks. That disabled the service. However...

GameBarPresenceWriter.exe still runs when I run my Steam games. I see a noticeable performance change when this service runs while gaming. I can ALT-TAB and shut it down, but I want to keep it from running altogether.

I found a way, but it's the "dirty" way and would rather just disable whatever service is triggering it. I took ownership of the executable and renamed it with some random letters.

In the Registry, the four Xbox services are disable (set to 4). Three before, now four thanks to your information.

Any idea what service is triggering the GameBarPresenceWriter.exe?

On a side note, if you will entertain the question, how do I keep Remote Desktop Services from un-disabling every time I reboot my PC. I've seen this go from disabled to automatic on it's own prior to rebooting as well.

Thanks again for the information.

Thanks. I can right-click and disable through Task Manager, but will copy your info just the same.

(Grateful for non-generic answers!)

Thank you very much for that actual response IgorD. Its beyond me why Microsoft has decided to force the XBox Live service upon us in the Windows 10 operating system. It has caused so much issues with steam overlay and other applications, even when uninstalling the X Box application, the underlying services are still being a pain in the ass. I mean.. if I wanted to be on X Box live, I would buy an X Box.

Hi,In regards to the GameBarPresenceWriter executable, i believe actually uninstalling the xbox related apps may do the trick. Windows will not allow you to do this through the apps and features menu. You will need to either use powershell,( its not difficult. You can find many tutorials online.) Or use third party uninstallers. I highly recommend Geek uninstaller. It cleans up the leftover registry files after uninstalling software.

Cheers
