Windows 10 Photo App freezes

Windows 10 Photo app freezes when trying "choose a filter" when editing.  I have to power off/on to get access to my computer again.   Please help.

Hi Sally. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Have you tried resetting the Photo app yet? Go to Settings-> Apps-> Apps & Features, scroll down to Photo app and highlight it, then choose Advanced Settings, then Reset.

Restart PC and check again.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg,  Thank you for volunteering and your quick response.

I tried resetting the Photo App as you suggested, then restarted – and same problem.  I am still unable to do any editing in the Photo App outside of cropping without PHOTO (and my computer) freezing.

I was considering uninstalling Photo and re-registering all store apps per a video I found.  Comments?

Thank you,
Sally

Yes, Sally, that's the next steps I'd advise, from either Option 1 or 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...

Also, if that isn't enough and you don't have it yet, what I would do is manually install Fall Creator Version 1709 by installing Media Creation Tool and choosing to Upgrade Now. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.... This the most stable method to upgrade to the new version (which you need anyway) and will bring you fully up to date with reinstalled Windows that often will solve any other problems you have - like with buggy Windows Updates which are the last place I'd get the new version from.

You can use the same tool to download the ISO or create bootable media so you only need to do it once, and have the bootable media for repairs or possible Clean Install.

If there are any hurdles during the Upgrade see these steps to optimize the install as this is evidence it's corrupted: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

You can also go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

But remember that a factory or Upgrade install are inferior installs that most enthusiasts would never run in the first place because they'd expect endless issues. Most prefer to do the gold standard Clean install from this link which has had no reported issues: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I'll keep working with you until this is resolved.

Hi Greg,

Thank you again for your response and all the information with links, very easy to use.  I removed, reinstalled, and re-registered Photo... same thing.  Then I installed the Media Creation Tool and reinstalled Windows 10. ... same thing.  Then I redid the sequence with Photo again... same thing.  :/

What next,  It didn't use to hang, only after the latest Windows Upgrade on 12/7 (I think)...

Thanks again for your help,

Sally

Hi again Sally -

Did you notice if a Windows or Version Update happened just before this problem came up? If this was caused by Windows Updates then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Installed Updates, then uninstall them from the link there, and hide with the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

If this is Fall Creators Update Version 1709, which you can check at Settings>System>About, you can also roll it back at Settings>Update & Security>Recovery, then hide it using the same tool above until it matures.

I wonder if the Fall Creators Version 1709 is compatbile with your PC? You can check here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

If not you can see if Go Back is still on the menu at Settings>Update & Security>Recovery. If not you can do a Clean Install with the last version which was stable for you with media available here: https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-scienc...

Then hide the latest version using Hide Updates tool: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

I would also consider doing a Clean install of the latest
