Contact list for Windows 10 Mail

When looking at my contact list "people" in Mail, it is accurate.  When composing an email and clicking on the people icon on the "To" line, I get a list of contacts that contain contacts I never saw before.  Some of my good contacts are there but not all of them.  The strange contacts are all types of names, addresses, etc.  How can I correct this?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Open the People app in Start menu apps list, click on Settings gear at bottom, then look over the list of accounts it is syncing addresses from. These should be the only accounts that provide names when you're addressing emails.

There is one big glaring bug I've been trying to get fixed now for over a year. For some reason the autocompleted addresses will suggest old addresses that have been deleted years ago from those same accounts. I have no idea where it even gets them except that it is an annoyance that many have complained about and I will continue to try to get fixed.

If you'd also like to express your opinion about this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. You can even click the Share button there to generate a link to your Feedback to post back here for others to vote up or add to it. But Microsoft will not see it here as this is a mostly volunteer-staffed forums where we try to solve your problems.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Hi Greg -

Thank you for responding.  Your suggestion didn't help

I went to start and opened the people app from the list of apps.  The contact list that came up was OK.  Clicked on the settings gear and it shows syncing from two email accounts.

I went into Outlook.com  e-mail and the contact list with both e-mail accounts looks OK.

I went back to Windows 10 Mail and still have same problem.

Also another issue and maybe they are connected - If I try to compose an e-mail in Outlook.com and I try to pull up addresses for the "To" line all I get is a blue box saying "My contacts" and I can't get any further with addresses.

I feel like my whole People world is screwed up!

Thanks for your help

Paul

Confirm again that the Contacts in the online mail accounts are complete.

What I would do is remove all Mail, People and Calendar Accounts from those apps, and also from Settings> Account > Email and App Accounts. Restart PC and check again no accounts are linked for Email or People/Contacts.

If one of the accounts is your Microsoft Account you sign into the PC with, first you can test it after all other accounts are removed to see if it is providing the bogus addresses.

Now add back each email account one at a time, check after they sync that the addresses being suggested are correct. This should tell you which account is bringing the unwanted addresses.

Hi Greg

I hope I did as you suggested -

I went into Settings>accounts>Email and App Accounts. I deleted 3 e-mail accounts listed on the top of the page (appears these were Windows 10 Mail accounts). On the lower part of the page there were two @live.com accounts.  I was able to delete one of them. The other one, the one I'm using now, I could not figure out how to delete. It is the e-mail tied into my Microsoft account.  When trying I would be directed to a Microsoft home page with Microsoft account info.

I restarted the PC and added this account (pmars43) back to Windows 10 mail and tried to compose an e-mail.  When I pulled up contacts, I got a list that was worse than before.  The bogus emails were duplicated two to three times.

Another question - I still have a Windows Live Mail 2012 account (the contact list for this one looks OK) - Can I delete that by going to control panel>programs & features and delete Windows Essentials 2012? Should I?

Thanks again for your help

Paul

When you go to the contact in the People app it should show you which mail account is syncing it. Find it in that mail account online and delete it. Or delete the mail account from the Windows 10 mail app which is generating the sync.

Paul, I gave you specific instructions how to delete the Microsoft Account mail by first changing to a local account in account settings, deleting all email accounts In all the places where I said to look, restarting the PC to add them back one by one Until you found the one causing the problem.

If the bogus addresses are still there after deleting all but the Microsoft account then either it or the unsupported Windows Live Mail account must be generating those addresses.

Yes I would uninstall the Windows Live Mail account in settings, apps and features. restart the PC and follow my suggestions again.

Remember that in between each step you should restart the PC to clear the uninstall data.

OK Greg here's where I'm at:

I think I followed your instructions, however I am confused when you say "I gave you specific instructions how to delete the Microsoft Account mail by first changing to a local account in account settings..."

Deleted the Windows Live 2012 Account using Programs and Features in control panel.

Deleting  the accounts I went Start>Settings gear>Accounts>Email & App Accounts

Deleted all e-mail accounts

Only account remaining is the *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. Also deleted contacts in the People App (Icon on task bar)

Rebooted  then added *** Email address is removed for privacy *** to Windows 10 Mail.  Tried to forward a message - bogus emails showed up.  Clicked on the people Icon and list was OK. Went into Outlook.com - Contact list OK - tried to send a message and all I get on the "to line" is "my contacts" in a blue box

Deleted pmars43 from Windows 10 mail - rebooted

Added non-Microsoft e-mail to Windows 10 Mail. Tried to forward a message - bogus emails showed up. Clicked on people icon get "contacts are hidden, search to find contact".

People App on Task bar is empty.

Again, thanks for your help,

Paul

So you were able to remove all of the mail account from Windows 10 Mail, yes or no?

And at that time there were also no accounts in the People app?

So then you restarted the PC as suggested and check again that both Mail and People are empty?

Now add each account back one at a time starting with your Microsoft account.

Test to see which account has the bonus name and remove them from the online account contacts

If the MS Account Mail and Contacts will remove without removing your Microsoft account from the PC, then that's enough.

I was trying to show you how to change from a MS Account to a Local Account temporarily in Settings > Accounts > Your Info in case it would not let you delete your MS Account Mail and Contacts. But it sounds like you were able to do that anyway. Or maybe you dot' use a MS account to sign into your PC?
