How to recover Microsoft Edge if it fails to launch

In some cases, Edge appears to launch but then quickly disappears immediately afterwards.  Once Edge gets in this condition, there is no way to launch Edge successfully, whether trying from the Taskbar, the Start Menu or a link from another app.

Hi,

We are investigating this issue and will update this thread with additional information as we work to resolve the root cause.

In the meantime, if you encounter this issue, you can recover Microsoft Edge by trying the following steps.

Suggestion 1

Important: If your PC is managed by an enterprise, try the steps here first:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b2d14b95-b081-4ea4-b4e6-5458def1bd8d/microsoft-edge-fails-to-launch-on-windows-10-enterprise?forum=win10itprogeneral

Caution:  Use this option only as a last resort.  It may result in data loss, including the loss of your favorites, settings, browser history, installed extensions, or other things maintained in your browser.

1) Turn “off” Device Sync Settings (Settings > Accounts > Sync your Settings > Sync Settings).

2) Open File Explorer and complete these steps:

a. In C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages, select and delete the following folder: Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe (Select “Yes” on any confirmation dialog that follows.)

b. In %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\SettingSync\metastore, delete meta.edb, if it exists.

c. In %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\SettingSync\remotemetastore\v1, delete meta.edb, if it exists.

3)
Restart your PC (Start > Power > Restart).

4) Turn “on” Device Sync Settings (Settings > Accounts > Sync your Settings > Sync Settings).

5) Search for “PowerShell” using Cortana.

6) Right-click the “Windows PowerShell” result, then select Run as administrator.

7) Copy the following command, then Paste it in the PowerShell window and press Enter to run it:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

8. When the command completes, Restart your PC (Start > Power > Restart).

Edge should launch again after your PC restarts, and your favorites and other synced settings should return after a while.

Suggestion 2

An invalid registry setting could prevent an Edge window from launching as expected. These steps should help with this issue.

  1. Search for “regedit” using Cortana, then launch Registry Editor from the results
  2. Navigate to the following folder: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppContainer\Storage\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge\Main
  3. Right-click the LastClosedHeight key, then click Modify…
  4. Delete any information in Value data:, then click OK
  5. Close Registry Editor

Suggestion 3

If Edge doesn’t launch on a Toshiba device and the “Toshiba Display utility” is installed, uninstalling it and then restarting your PC may help.

  1. Search for "Control Panel" using Cortana, then launch Control Panel from the results
  2. Under Programs, navigate to Uninstall a program
  3. Uninstall the Toshiba Display utility
  4. Restart your PC (Start > Power > Restart)

Suggestion 4

If Comodo antivirus is installed on your device, make sure it is updated to version 10.0.1.6294 or higher. This will be available for CIS 10 users on August 29, 2017, and for users with older versions by September 5, 2017.

The latest Comodo version can be found here. To check your version:

  1. Open Comodo Antivirus using the desktop shortcut or through the start menu
  2. Click the Question mark '?' in the bottom-right corner of the interface then select 'About'
  3. The version number is shown in the 'About' interface

Regards,

TieroChi
